Chapter 3 - The Dark Stairwell

Ethan did not hesitate for a single second.

He fired two warning shots into the ceiling, the deafening cracks echoing off the marble walls.

The tactical intruders dove for cover, giving Ethan just enough time to drag Claire toward the hidden executive stairwell.

He slammed the heavy steel door behind them, locking the deadbolt just as bullets began to rain against the metal.

"Keep moving down," Ethan ordered, his voice echoing in the pitch-black vertical shaft.

Claire gripped the handrail, her knees shaking so badly she could barely take a step.

"Why are people trying to kill you over corporate blueprints?" she cried out in the darkness.

Ethan flicked on a small tactical flashlight, casting a narrow beam down the endless concrete stairs.

"Because the technology my company developed can revolutionize medical imaging and cure the disease that killed my mother," he confessed quietly.

Claire froze for a fraction of a second, the raw pain in his voice tugging at something deep inside her memory.

She looked at the cold, ruthless billionaire and suddenly saw a shattered boy hiding behind a mask of wealth.

"We need to reach the server room on the thirtieth floor before they wipe the mainframe," Ethan stated, pushing past her.

They descended twelve flights of stairs in agonizing silence, jumping at every creak of the building.

When they finally reached the thirtieth floor, Ethan carefully pushed the heavy fire door open.

The server room was massive, filled with rows of blinking mainframes and a mess of tangled wires.

Standing at the central console was a man typing furiously on the keyboard.

Ethan lowered his weapon, absolute betrayal washing over his exhausted face.

"Marcus?" Ethan whispered, staring at his chief operating officer and oldest family friend.

Marcus turned around, a cynical smile twisting his weathered features.

"I am sorry, Ethan, but your medical technology is worth billions on the black market," Marcus said smoothly.

Marcus pressed a final button on the console, and a menacing digital timer appeared on the main screen, counting down from five minutes.

"I just initiated a catastrophic thermal overload," Marcus announced cheerfully.

"When that clock hits zero, this entire floor will incinerate, taking you and your little assistant with it."
