Chapter 10 - The Promise

The armored truck tore through the deserted streets of Chicago, heading straight for the federal building.

With his aggressive legal team securing his temporary release, Ethan had called in every favor to ensure their safety.

They handed the hidden flash drive directly to the lead FBI director, exposing Marcus's massive embezzlement and corporate treason.

Within three hours, federal agents raided Marcus's estate, arresting him for the sabotage, the arson, and the historical murders.

The nightmare was finally over, and the morning sun began to rise, painting the city skyline in brilliant shades of gold.

Ethan and Claire stood on the rooftop of the federal building, wrapped in thick blankets as the cold wind whipped around them.

Ethan gently took her hand, his thumb tracing the soot and bruises marring her soft skin.

"You saved my company, my legacy, and my life tonight," he said, his blue eyes filled with an overwhelming, absolute devotion.

"I just did what I promised I would do twenty-two years ago," Claire replied with a warm, exhausted smile.

"I watched over you."

Ethan leaned in slowly, closing the distance between them until their lips finally met in a soft, desperate kiss.

It was a kiss that held two decades of silent longing, a promise of a future they were finally free to build together.

He wrapped his strong arms around her, knowing he had finally found his permanent home in her embrace.

Weeks later, after the company was rebuilt, Ethan and Claire visited the private bank vault holding his mother's remaining possessions.

Ethan wanted to give Claire his mother's antique engagement ring to officially ask her to marry him.

He unlocked the heavy steel deposit box, pulling out a small velvet case and a sealed, yellowed envelope.

Claire curiously opened the envelope, pulling out an old, faded photograph of two young women smiling brightly at a hospital graduation.

One woman was Diane Mercer, and the other was unmistakably Claire's mother, Ruth.

Written on the back of the photograph in Diane's elegant handwriting was a chilling message that made Ethan's blood run cold.

"If anything happens to me, you must tell them that the girls were switched to protect the real heir."
