Chapter 9 - The Reunion in the Dark

Marin screamed and aimed her stolen rifle at the sniper, knowing she was entirely too slow to pull the trigger first.
She fully expected to see her beautiful son violently murdered right in front of her eyes.
Instead, a massive, terrifyingly loud gunshot echoed from the dark ridge directly above them.
The sniper’s head violently snapped forward as the high-caliber bullet struck him instantly.
His lifeless body collapsed into the snow, the red laser sight plunging harmlessly into the dirt.
Marin completely froze, aiming her weapon wildly into the dark trees to find the new shooter.
A tall, broad-shouldered man slowly stepped out from the heavy shadows of the pine trees.
He was wearing an expensive charcoal overcoat entirely ruined by mud and fresh blood.
Marin lowered her rifle completely as she stared at the impossibly handsome face of Raphael Santoro.
It had been five long, agonizing years, but his piercing gray eyes had not changed at all.
Raphael looked at the woman he had never stopped loving, his chest heaving with heavy emotion.
He quickly closed the distance between them, ignoring the weapons and the blood entirely.
He pulled Marin into a desperate, bone-crushing embrace, burying his face into her freezing, wet hair.
He repeatedly whispered frantic apologies, begging her to forgive him for everything he had done.
Marin clung to his broad shoulders, completely overwhelmed by a massive rush of profound relief.
Raphael finally pulled back and looked down at the tiny boy peering out from the hollow tree.
He knelt in the snow, tears freely streaming down his face as he gently touched his son’s cold cheek for the very first time.
Leo looked bravely at the intimidating man and asked if he was the good guy.
Raphael choked back a sob and promised the boy that he would destroy anyone who ever tried to hurt him.
Suddenly, the deafening, rhythmic chopping sound of heavy rotor blades filled the night sky.
Three massive, unmarked military helicopters hovered directly over the forest canopy.

Blinding white searchlights pierced violently through the trees, completely trapping them in a circle of harsh light.
A heavily amplified voice echoed from a loudspeaker, ordering them to drop their weapons immediately.
