Chapter 6 - The Highway Ambush

Thick black smoke poured into Marin’s tiny living room from the breached doorway.
Beckett moved with terrifying speed, firing three suppressed shots into the cloud of smoke.
Two heavy bodies crashed loudly onto the wooden floorboards of the hallway.
Marin scooped Leo up into her arms, covering his small face against her chest to muffle his screams.
Beckett yelled for her to follow him closely as he kicked the remaining debris out of their path.
They sprinted down the narrow apartment stairwell, jumping completely over a dead mercenary.
They burst out the back exit and ran blindly into the freezing, snow-covered alleyway.
Beckett had hot-wired an old, rusted pickup truck and left it idling near the dumpsters.
He shoved Marin and Leo into the passenger side and jumped violently behind the steering wheel.
He slammed his foot on the gas pedal, tearing out of the alley just as more armed men rounded the corner.
Bullets sparked viciously against the metal tailgate of the truck as they sped toward the dark highway.
Marin kept her head down, wrapping her body entirely around her terrified four-year-old son.
She asked Beckett where they could possibly hide from a billionaire phantom's army.
Beckett said there was an abandoned coal mine ten miles outside of town with a reinforced steel bunker.
He promised that if they could reach the tunnels, the mercenaries would never be able to dig them out.
They merged onto the empty, snow-covered interstate at a dangerously high speed.
The truck rattled violently, threatening to completely fall apart under the immense pressure.
Marin looked anxiously into the cracked side mirror and saw a pair of bright halogen headlights rapidly approaching.
A massive, heavily armored black SUV was easily catching up to their struggling vehicle.
Beckett cursed loudly and aggressively swerved the truck to prevent the SUV from passing them.
The armored vehicle did not try to pass them at all.
Instead, the SUV violently rammed the back bumper of the pickup truck.
The horrific impact sent the rusted truck spinning wildly out of control across the icy blacktop.
May you like
Marin screamed as the world turned entirely upside down.
The truck smashed through the metal guardrail and plummeted violently down a steep, snow-covered embankment.
