Chapter 9 - The Tuesday Morning Reckoning

The SWAT team aggressively pinned Ethan against the cold concrete wall, kicking his legs apart.
Margaret, the furious hospital administrator, walked into the basement flanked by the Chief of Police.
It was now early Tuesday morning, and the hospital's power had finally been fully restored.
Margaret looked at the bloody makeshift operating room with pure, unadulterated disgust.
She proudly announced that Ethan was under arrest for kidnapping, assault, and the attempted murder of a dying patient.
Ethan did not resist the heavy steel handcuffs biting tightly into his wrists.
He simply smiled, nodding his head toward the metal basin resting on the surgical table.
He calmly informed the Chief of Police that the tumor in the basin was entirely benign.
He loudly declared that Julian Vance had orchestrated a massive insurance fraud scheme by intentionally misdiagnosing terminal cancer.
The Police Chief frowned, looking down at Julian, who was still tied to the radiator and currently whimpering in pain.
Ethan urged the police to test the tumor in an independent pathology lab immediately.
Margaret scoffed, refusing to believe that her prestigious hospital had been used for a criminal pharmaceutical conspiracy.
However, David stepped forward and handed the Police Chief a stack of printed financial records he had found in Julian's briefcase.
The records clearly showed millions of dollars secretly wired into Julian's offshore accounts from an experimental drug manufacturer.
The Police Chief read the documents, his expression hardening into cold, professional fury.
He ordered his officers to arrest Julian Vance and secure the bloody tumor as crucial state evidence.
Margaret was completely silenced, realizing her entire administrative career was about to be destroyed by the massive scandal.
The paramedics carefully transferred Claire onto a pristine stretcher, rushing her upstairs to the proper surgical intensive care unit.
The police agreed to temporarily release Ethan on his own recognizance until the formal investigation was concluded.
Ethan sat by Claire's bedside in the ICU for the next twelve hours, holding her warm hand and praying for her to wake up.
The sun set on Tuesday evening, casting a beautiful golden glow across her peaceful, sleeping face.
Suddenly, her eyelids fluttered softly, and she squeezed his fingers with surprising strength.

She opened her eyes, looking at Ethan with absolute clarity and overwhelming love.
Ethan smiled through his tears, knowing they had finally survived the nightmare, but his pager suddenly buzzed with a terrifying new code.
