Chapter 16 - The Alpine Descent

Ethan stared into the cold, dead eyes of the woman he had mentored for three years.

He realized the brilliant, compassionate surgical fellow he once knew had been completely hollowed out by greed.

Sarah demanded his encrypted laptop, believing Ethan had kept detailed surgical notes on how he successfully separated the tumor from the aorta.

Ethan slowly raised his hands, pretending to comply as he reached into the inner pocket of his dark jacket.

Instead of a laptop, he pulled a shattered glass ampoule of highly concentrated, vaporized fentanyl he had prepared for Marcus.

He crushed the remaining glass in his leather glove and violently smashed his fist across Sarah’s face.

The powerful narcotic powder exploded directly into her eyes and respiratory tract, instantly bypassing her blood-brain barrier.

Sarah dropped the pistol, gasping for air as her central nervous system suffered an immediate, catastrophic shutdown.

She collapsed to the sand, heavily sedated and completely paralyzed within seconds.

Ethan did not wait for the police to notice the struggle; he grabbed her dropped weapon and disappeared into the coastal woods.

David was waiting in a stolen sedan three miles down the highway, his laptop glowing brightly in the dark cabin.

Ethan threw himself into the car, his clothes soaked in ocean water and his knuckles bleeding freely.

He ordered David to track the transponder codes of every private cargo flight that had departed Charleston in the last hour.

David’s fingers flew across the keyboard, hacking into the FAA air traffic control grid with desperate speed.

He located a heavy transport jet climbing to cruising altitude, completely unregistered and maintaining a flight path directly toward Switzerland.

They had a seven-hour window before the plane landed at the syndicate’s private airstrip near the Alps.

Ethan directed David to an underground airstrip operated by his old friend, the hospital maintenance manager who had black-market smuggling connections.

The manager owed Ethan his life for a discrete medical favor years ago, and he provided them with a stripped-down, supersonic corporate jet.

They launched into the night sky, pushing the engines well past their safe operational limits to close the distance across the Atlantic.

During the flight, Ethan meticulously cleaned and loaded Sarah’s stolen pistol, his medical mind shifting entirely into the mindset of a soldier.

He knew Apex BioGen would heavily guard their primary facility, completely expecting him to attempt a foolish rescue.

He reviewed the architectural blueprints David managed to pull from a Swiss municipal server, memorizing every ventilation shaft and blind spot.

The facility was carved directly into the side of a frozen mountain, accessible only by a heavily fortified tramway.

As the sun began to rise over the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Alps, Ethan felt a terrifying, singular focus take over his soul.

He was no longer a surgeon bound by an oath to do no harm; he was a husband preparing to burn an entire mountain to the ground.
