Chapter 6 - The Breach

The smell of melting metal and ozone instantly filled the small, concrete room.

Theodore pushed Gabrielle behind him, shielding her and the sleeping babies with his own body.

Victor raised his assault rifle, aiming directly at the glowing, superheated center of the steel door.

"Julian tracked the GPS in your SUV, Theodore," Victor said grimly over the hissing sound of the torch.

"He sent a heavily armed cleanup crew to finish the job."

The heavy door suddenly buckled inward, crashing violently onto the concrete floor with a deafening boom.

Thick gray smoke poured into the room, followed by the blinding beams of tactical flashlights.

"Fire!" Victor shouted, squeezing the trigger of his rifle in short, controlled bursts.

Theodore raised his pistol and fired into the smoke, hitting one of the masked intruders in the chest.

The narrow hallway outside became a chaotic war zone of deafening gunfire and flying concrete shrapnel.

"We cannot hold this chokepoint forever, they have too many men!" Victor yelled, swapping a fresh magazine into his weapon.

"There is an old emergency ventilation shaft behind the weapon racks," Victor instructed rapidly.

"Take your family and crawl to the surface, I will hold them off here."

Theodore refused to leave his loyal friend behind to die in a cramped basement.

"I am not leaving you, Victor," Theodore argued, firing another round into the doorway.

"You have to protect your sons, Theo, go now!" Victor ordered, throwing a smoke grenade into the corridor to buy them time.

Theodore grabbed Gabrielle's hand and pulled her toward the heavy metal grate at the back of the room.

He kicked the grate open and hoisted Gabrielle up into the dark, dusty air duct.

He carefully handed her the two babies, ensuring they were secure against her chest.

Theodore climbed in right behind them, pulling the metal grate shut just as heavily armed men stormed into the bunker below.

They crawled through the suffocating darkness for what felt like hours, listening to the muffled sounds of gunfire fading away.

When they finally pushed through the exterior vent, they emerged into a dark, trash-filled alleyway miles from the safe house.

They were completely alone, unarmed, and hunted by a billionaire with endless resources.

Gabrielle leaned against the dirty brick wall, struggling to catch her breath while the babies whimpered softly.

"What do we do now, Theo?" she asked, her voice trembling with absolute exhaustion.

Theodore looked up at the towering, glass peak of Callahan Tower glowing arrogantly against the night sky.

"We stop running and we take the fight directly to him," Theodore said with dangerous resolve.

He pulled a small, black keycard from his wallet that he had kept hidden for emergencies.

"Julian thinks he owns the building, but he forgot who actually built the security mainframe."
