Chapter 7 - The True Enemy

Lucas stared at the phone in his hand as if it had turned into a venomous snake.
"Arthur?" Lucas asked, unable to comprehend what he was hearing.
Emma’s father chuckled through the phone speaker, a dark and greedy sound.
"The Bennetts are so busy fighting each other, they left the back door wide open," Arthur said.
Lucas looked down at Emma, who was trembling violently in his arms.
"Dad?" Emma cried out, her voice breaking with utter confusion. "What are you doing?"
"I’m getting what we deserve, sweetie," her father replied coldly.
"You married a billionaire, but you never sent a dime back home to save the bakery."
Arthur explained how easy it was to bribe one of Margaret’s private nurses.
While Margaret thought she was stealing the baby for corporate leverage, Arthur paid the nurse double to hand the child out the back window.
Margaret struggled against Marcus’s grip, screaming in absolute fury.
"You incompetent fools let a baker steal a Bennett heir!" Margaret shrieked.
Lucas didn't care about his mother’s wounded pride or his corporate empire anymore.
He hung up the phone and looked at his head of security.
"Trace that call, Marcus," Lucas ordered, carrying Emma out the front door.
"He can't be far, the baby was born less than an hour ago."
Marcus jumped into the driver's seat of the SUV while Lucas secured Emma in the back.
Marcus typed frantically on his laptop as the SUV sped back toward the city limits.
"Got him," Marcus announced, slamming his laptop shut.
"He is at a private airfield just ten miles outside of Chicago."
Lucas gripped his gun tightly, his knuckles completely white.
Arthur was trying to load his newborn son onto an untraceable private jet.
They arrived at the airfield just as a small, twin-engine plane started its propellers on the runway.
Lucas kicked his car door open before the SUV even came to a complete stop.
He sprinted across the dark tarmac, the wind from the propellers whipping his face.
He saw Arthur standing near the plane's stairs, holding a small blue bundle in his arms.

Arthur saw Lucas running and immediately pulled a revolver from his coat.
He pointed the gun directly at the tiny bundle wrapped in the blue blanket.
