Chapter 6 - The Ransom

Lucas tore the medical wing apart, throwing metal trays and shattering glass cabinets.
There was no baby.
He picked up the heart monitor and smashed it violently against the concrete wall.
Emma slowly opened her eyes, groaning weakly as the loud crash woke her up.
"Lucas," she whispered, her voice barely a dry rasp.
He dropped to his knees beside her, tears finally spilling hot down his cheeks.
"Where is he, Emma?" Lucas sobbed. "Where is our son?"
Emma looked confused, her drugged eyes darting around the sterile room.
"Your mother took him," she cried, gripping his hand with weak fingers.
"She said if you want him back, you have to sign the papers."
Lucas stood up, a dark, terrifying calm washing over his completely broken heart.
He carried Emma out of the basement, wrapping her securely in a thick wool blanket.
When they reached the main floor, Marcus had Margaret pinned to an antique dining table.
Lucas walked up to his mother and placed the barrel of his pistol directly against her forehead.
"Where is my son?" Lucas asked, his voice dead and hollow.
Margaret didn't flinch, even with the cold steel pressing into her skin.
"Sign the company over, Lucas, and I will tell you," she sneered.
Lucas slowly pulled the hammer of the gun back, ready to pull the trigger.
Suddenly, a loud buzzing sound came from Lucas’s coat pocket.
It was his cell phone.
He didn't want to answer it, but a strange instinct told him he needed to.
He pulled the phone out and saw an unknown, blocked number on the screen.
He answered the call and put it on speaker so his mother could hear.
"Hello, Lucas," a cheerful, familiar voice echoed from the phone.
Lucas froze, his blood turning entirely to ice.
"If you want to see your son alive, you are going to wire fifty million dollars to my account," the voice said.
Margaret’s face suddenly turned completely white with pure, unadulterated shock.

The person demanding the ransom wasn't working for Margaret.
Because the voice on the phone belonged to Emma’s sweet, small-town father from Wisconsin.
