Chapter 5 - The Informant's Workshop

The threat against my innocent granddaughter chilled me to the absolute bone.

Mason had crossed a line that transformed him from a greedy criminal into a complete monster.

Brenda pulled the SUV over to the side of the dark highway, sobbing uncontrollably over the steering wheel.

I placed my hand on her shoulder and promised her that we would get her daughter back safely.

I told Brenda that we could not negotiate with a man who had already murdered a bank director in cold blood.

We needed leverage, and the only leverage in this entire war was hidden inside Florence’s past.

I ordered Brenda to drive us directly to Florence’s antique book workshop in the quiet streets of Berkeley.

The tactical team had taken the blue passbook, but Mason still did not have the secondary passcode.

If Florence was truly an FBI informant, she would have left a backup file or a clue in her own sanctuary.

We arrived at the dark, dusty storefront and carefully unlocked the front door using my spare key.

The workshop smelled heavily of old paper, leather bindings, and dried glue.

We frantically searched every drawer, every bookshelf, and every hidden compartment we could find.

I remembered how Florence used to meticulously measure the wooden floorboards near her restoration desk.

I grabbed a heavy iron crowbar from her tool kit and smashed it into the oak floorboards.

The wood splintered, revealing a heavy steel lockbox bolted directly into the concrete foundation.

The lockbox required a four-digit numerical code to open.

Brenda panicked, guessing birth dates and anniversaries, but the red light flashed in denial every single time.

I closed my eyes and thought about Florence’s final days in the hospital.

She had kept repeating the page number of her favorite classic novel during her fever dreams.

I typed in the number four, seven, two, one.

The heavy steel box clicked loudly, and the heavy lid slowly hissed open.

Inside the box was a small black flash drive, a loaded 9mm pistol, and a handwritten letter addressed specifically to me.

I unfolded the letter, recognizing Florence’s elegant, sweeping handwriting immediately.

She wrote that if I was reading this, she was dead, and Mason had likely made his move against our family.

She explained that the flash drive contained every single piece of evidence needed to dismantle the entire criminal syndicate.

She also provided the secondary passcode required to access the two hundred million dollars in cartel funds.

I felt a massive surge of hope, realizing my wife had given us the exact weapon we needed to fight back.

I reached into the box and grabbed the black flash drive, ready to formulate a plan to save my granddaughter.

Suddenly, the front window of the workshop shattered violently as a small, heavy object was thrown inside.

May you like

It rolled across the floorboards and stopped right at our feet, emitting a high-pitched electronic beep.

I looked down in sheer horror and realized it was a military-grade explosive charge.
