Chapter 4 - The Bitter Truth

The expensive scotch instantly tasted like pure poison in my mouth.

I dropped the crystal glass, watching it shatter into tiny pieces on Arthur’s expensive hardwood floor.

My most trusted lawyer had been working with my treacherous son-in-law the entire time.

Arthur casually pulled a small, silver revolver from his desk drawer and aimed it at my chest.

He explained that Mason had promised him a ten percent cut of the two hundred million dollars.

He told me that my era of honest business was over, and a new, ruthless generation was taking control.

I stared at the barrel of the gun, realizing my naive trust had finally doomed me.

Before Arthur could pull the trigger, the large glass window behind him violently exploded inward.

A sleek black SUV had just driven straight through his pristine front yard and smashed directly into the living room.

The massive impact threw Arthur across the room, knocking the silver revolver out of his hand.

I shielded my face from the flying glass and plaster, coughing through the thick cloud of drywall dust.

The driver’s side door of the ruined SUV kicked open, and a figure stepped out into the chaotic room.

It was Brenda.

My daughter looked terrified, her hands shaking wildly as she gripped the steering wheel of the wrecked vehicle.

She screamed at me to get into the car before Arthur regained consciousness.

I did not hesitate for a single second.

I climbed into the passenger seat, sweeping broken glass off the leather upholstery.

Brenda threw the car into reverse, tires screeching as she backed out of the destroyed living room and onto the street.

We sped away into the rainy night, leaving Arthur bleeding in the wreckage of his own home.

I looked at my daughter in complete shock, unable to understand why she had just saved my life.

I asked her how she knew where I was and why she was suddenly defying her powerful husband.

Brenda gripped the steering wheel tightly, tears streaming down her pale face.

She confessed that she had found a hidden microphone in Mason’s home office earlier that evening.

She had overheard Mason talking to the tactical team about murdering me and framing it as a suicide.

She told me she had always loved money, but she would never let her husband slaughter her own father.

She handed me a crumpled piece of paper she had stolen from Mason’s desk before fleeing the house.

It was a printed background check on her mother, Florence.

I read the document under the dim glow of the dashboard lights, my heart skipping a beat.

Florence had not been laundering money for the cartel as the tactical leader had claimed.

The official document proved that my wife had been a deep-cover informant for the FBI for over twenty years.

She had used her antique book workshop to secretly intercept and decode the cartel's financial ledgers.

Florence had been building an airtight federal case to destroy Mason and his criminal associates.

Brenda looked at me with absolute panic in her eyes as her cell phone suddenly began to ring.

The caller ID flashing on the screen was Mason’s private number.

I answered the phone and put it on speaker, demanding to know what he wanted.

Mason laughed coldly and told Brenda that she should have never checked on her sleeping daughter tonight.

He revealed that my seven-year-old granddaughter was no longer in her bed, and if we didn't bring him the passbook, she would die.
