Chapter 18 - The Geneva Handover

The flashing blue and red lights of the Swiss federal police and Interpol vehicles illuminated the snowy airfield like a chaotic disco. Florence had contacted her one remaining trusted superior in Washington, coordinating an international task force to legally apprehend Senator Sterling on foreign soil.
Sterling was forcefully pushed into the back of a heavily armored police transport, his head bowed in absolute defeat. The arrogant politician who had controlled global syndicates and ordered the deaths of innocent people was now nothing more than a broken old man facing multiple consecutive life sentences. The tactical mercenary from the warehouse was equally secured in a separate vehicle, screaming profanities as the Swiss authorities confiscated his weapons.
I stood near the wing of the private jet, watching the entire corrupt empire finally collapse into dust. The cold wind bit at my face, but I felt warmer than I had in weeks. The heavy, suffocating weight of fear and grief had finally lifted from my chest.
Florence walked over to me after signing the official handover documents with the Interpol director. She looked exhausted, her tailored suit covered in dust and soot from our escape through the bank's ventilation shaft, but her smile was entirely genuine and radiant.
She handed me the heavy leather briefcase containing the physical master ledger. She told me the authorities had accepted the high-resolution digital copies I had broadcasted as sufficient evidence to hold Sterling indefinitely. She wanted me to keep the original book as a reminder that we had beaten them at their own ruthless game.
I took the briefcase and set it on the tarmac. I told Florence I didn't want any reminders of the darkness we had just survived. I pulled a silver lighter from my pocket, flipped it open, and dropped the flame directly onto the leather-bound book. We stood side by side, watching the paper curl and blacken as the final physical link to the cartel's billions burned away into ashes.
An Interpol agent approached us quietly, offering us a secure, heavily escorted flight back to the United States. He assured us that with Sterling and Mason behind bars, and the cartel's financial network completely obliterated, our family was unequivocally safe.
I looked at Florence, asking her if she was finally ready to go home.
May you like
She reached out and took my hand, intertwining her fingers tightly with mine. She said she was absolutely ready to be a mother and a grandmother again, but the antique book shop in Berkeley was entirely gone. She casually mentioned that she had always wanted to open a small restoration workshop somewhere quiet, perhaps overlooking a lake in the Swiss Alps, far away from the noise of the city.
I smiled, realizing the billionaire real estate tycoon was ready to retire anyway. My empire was secure, my family was safe, and the woman I loved more than anything in the world was standing right beside me. We turned our backs on the burning ledger and walked toward the waiting jet, finally leaving the shadows behind us forever.
