Chapter 6 - The Bite

Silas fired blindly as Titan’s massive jaws clamped onto his right forearm.
The gunshot echoed deafeningly in the enclosed bunker, the bullet ricocheting off the concrete wall.
Titan thrashed his head violently, easily disarming the traitor in a matter of seconds.
Silas screamed in agony, falling backward onto the floor as the Cane Corso pinned him down.
Roman did not hesitate.
He drew his own weapon, stepped over the struggling man, and pressed the barrel to Silas’s forehead.
Roman commanded Titan to release the guard.
Titan immediately let go, stepping back with blood dripping from his dark muzzle.
Roman looked down at his former friend with absolutely zero mercy.
He pulled the trigger once, ending the betrayal instantly.
I scrambled backward against the wall, covering my mouth to stifle a sob of pure terror.
I had never seen a man die before.
Roman turned to me, lowering his weapon slowly so he would not frighten me further.
He checked my body with his eyes, making sure the ricochet had not struck me.
Then I heard a soft, pathetic whine coming from the floor.
I looked down and saw a steady stream of dark blood pooling beneath Titan’s front leg.
The traitor’s wild gunshot had grazed the dog’s left shoulder.
I instantly dropped to my knees, completely ignoring the dead body resting three feet away.
I pulled off my sweater and pressed it firmly against Titan’s bleeding wound to apply pressure.
Roman knelt beside me, his large hands carefully hovering over mine.
He watched in stunned silence as the terrifying guard dog licked tears from my cheek.
I told Roman we needed a veterinarian immediately or the dog would go into shock.
Roman shook his head and said we could not trust anyone on the outside right now.
He told me there was a fully stocked trauma clinic hidden on the second floor of the mansion.
He scooped the massive 130-pound animal into his arms like a puppy and sprinted toward the stairs.
I ran after him, my hands covered in blood.
As we reached the top of the stairs, the dead guard’s radio crackled to life on the floor below.

Detective Vance’s voice echoed through the empty bunker.
Vance asked if Roman was dead yet, because he had a surprise waiting for him at the docks.
