Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The police commissioner was perfectly healthy, sipping wine in a tailored suit.
Roman’s assault rifle remained perfectly leveled, but shock briefly flashed across his scarred face.
Julian slowly set his wine glass on the glass coffee table and applauded softly.
Julian confessed that the commissioner’s assassination had been completely staged to frame me.
It was a theatrical distraction meant to force Roman out of his heavily fortified estate.
Roman did not waste time negotiating with traitors.
He pulled the trigger, sending a burst of rifle fire across the living room.
Julian dove behind the heavy marble kitchen island, shouting for his hidden guards.
The commissioner was not as fast, taking a bullet to the shoulder and screaming in agony.
Four armed mercenaries poured out of the penthouse bedrooms, laying down heavy suppressive fire.
Roman shoved me, Lily, and Titan behind a massive reinforced concrete pillar in the foyer.
He reloaded his rifle and systematically returned fire with terrifying, unmatched precision.
He dropped two of the mercenaries with perfect headshots, forcing the others to retreat.
Titan barked aggressively, ready to charge into the gunfire, but I held firmly to his uninjured harness.
Roman flanked the remaining guards, moving like a shadow through his own ruined home.
He eliminated the last two mercenaries and cornered Julian behind the marble island.
Roman kicked Julian’s weapon away and pressed the rifle barrel to his older brother’s temple.
Julian raised his hands in surrender, begging for his life like a pathetic coward.
Roman lowered the rifle and violently knocked Julian unconscious with the heavy stock.
The immediate threat was entirely neutralized, and the massive penthouse fell completely silent.
Roman’s loyal backup forces finally swarmed the building, securing the wounded commissioner and arresting Julian.
We had won the battle, dismantled the coup, and cleared my name from the terrorism charges.
Roman walked over to me, his face exhausted but filled with a profound, quiet gratitude.
He promised me that I would receive a new store, a clean record, and his eternal protection.
Titan rested his heavy head on my lap, sighing contentedly as I scratched his ears.
Roman walked over to his private wall safe and retrieved a master decryption drive.
He told me he needed to clear my police record manually using the commissioner’s stolen digital ledger.
He plugged the drive into a sleek laptop on the desk, opening the highly classified police database.
Roman smiled, telling me that I was officially a ghost in the system again.
He stepped away to speak with his men, leaving me alone at the desk.
I curiously scrolled down to the bottom of the classified police ledger.
My heart stopped completely as I recognized a heavily encrypted file labeled with my own family’s name.
I opened the file and stared at the official hit order that had resulted in my parents' unsolved murders ten years ago.

The signature authorizing the brutal assassination did not belong to a corrupt cop or a rival mobster.
It was Roman Calder’s personal signature.
