Chapter 2 - The Lethal Lockdown
Marco did not waste a single fraction of a second.
He grabbed the black disc from my hand and sprinted toward the reinforced glass balcony doors.
He kicked the heavy door open, reared his arm back, and hurled the device far into the night sky.
We all hit the floor as a deafening explosion shattered the quiet atmosphere of the estate grounds.
The blast illuminated the dark windows with a blinding flash of orange fire.
The sheer force rattled the expensive artwork on the nursery walls.
I pulled myself up, brushing glass fragments off my tailored shirt, my heart hammering against my ribs.
"Initiate full lockdown immediately!" I roared over the crying babies.
Marco tapped his earpiece furiously, barking orders to the perimeter guards.
Heavy steel security shutters began to slide down over every window in the mansion with a metallic grinding noise.
We were sealed inside a fortress, impenetrable from the outside world.
But the horrifying truth was that the threat was already trapped inside with us.
I turned to look at the three nannies, the doctors, and Elena, my eyes scanning them for any sign of guilt.
"Nobody leaves this room until I find out who planted that bomb," I declared, pulling my sidearm from my shoulder holster.
Dr. Gable backed away nervously, holding his medical bag tightly against his chest.
"Adrien, I am a medical professional, I had nothing to do with this!" he stammered defensively.
Before I could interrogate him further, a loud click echoed from the heavy mahogany nursery doors.
The electronic deadbolt slid into place entirely on its own.
Marco ran to the door and pulled the handle, but it was completely jammed.
"The internal security grid has been hacked," Marco warned, drawing his own weapon.
A sudden, sharp hissing sound hissed from the overhead ventilation shafts.
Thick, white smoke began to pour into the nursery, obscuring the ceiling lights.
"It is a knockout gas!" Elena screamed, covering Sophie's face with her apron.
