Chapter 9 - The Decoy

Before Victoria could even stand up, the deafening sound of a sniper rifle echoed across the water.
The mercenary standing closest to Victoria dropped to the wooden pier instantly.
Dante grabbed me and Leo, tackling us behind a stack of heavy wooden shipping crates.
Gunfire erupted from all sides of the dockyard.
Dante’s hidden tactical teams poured out of the surrounding shadows, completely swarming Victoria’s men.
The ambush was swift, brutal, and flawlessly executed by the Moretti syndicate.
I covered Leo's ears to protect him from the terrifying noise of the shootout.
Within two minutes, the entire dockyard fell dead silent.
Dante stood up from behind the crates, keeping his gun aimed at the pier.
Victoria was kneeling on the wet wood, completely surrounded by Dante's armed men.
Her white designer coat was stained with mud and dirt, her perfect composure entirely shattered.
Dante walked slowly toward his wife, the fake diamonds crunching under his expensive boots.
"You really thought I would hand over thirty million dollars without a backup plan?" Dante asked coldly.
Victoria looked up at him, tears of pure rage streaming down her face.
"The Commission will kill you for attacking your own wife," Victoria threatened desperately.
"The Commission gave me permission to execute you an hour ago," Dante replied, showing no emotion.
"I sent them the security footage of you admitting to selling Elena to the Russians."
Victoria's face drained of all color as she realized her absolute defeat.
"Treason against the family is punishable by death, Victoria," Dante stated softly.
He raised his handgun and aimed it directly at her forehead.
I looked away and buried my face in Leo's shoulder, unable to watch my sister die.
"Wait!" Victoria screamed, holding her hands up in surrender.
"If you kill me, you will never find out who actually ordered our father to sign that contract."
Dante paused, his finger hovering perfectly still over the trigger.
"What are you talking about?" Dante demanded.
Victoria laughed a broken, hysterical laugh.
"Our father did not owe money to the Russians, Dante," she spat.
"He owed it to someone much more powerful, and that person is still hunting Elena."

Before Victoria could speak another word, a single suppressed gunshot hit her directly in the chest.
She collapsed backward into the dark, freezing water of the lake.
