Chapter 4 - The Traitor

Dante dragged me into an alleyway where his armored SUV was secretly parked.

We climbed into the vehicle, and he immediately hit the gas.

The heavy car roared to life and tore through the wet streets of Chicago.

"We have to find her right now," I cried, staring out the window into the dark city.

"My men are tracking her license plate through the city's traffic cameras," Dante assured me.

He drove with terrifying speed, his face carved out of pure stone.

"How did she know I was at the airport?" I asked.

"I used a fake passport and a completely different name."

Dante gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white.

"Someone tipped her off before your plane even landed."

I thought about the very few people who knew I was coming back to Chicago.

I had only told the cemetery director and Mia.

My phone rang loudly through the car's bluetooth speakers.

The caller ID showed Mia's name.

I answered it frantically.

"Mia, are you okay?" I yelled.

"I am so sorry, Elena," Mia cried into the phone.

Her voice sounded strange, completely devoid of the panic she should have been feeling.

"Where are you?" I demanded.

"I needed the money, Elena," Mia confessed through tears.

My heart shattered into a million pieces.

My best friend had sold me and my son to the cartel.

"Victoria paid off all my family's debts," Mia sobbed.

"Did you let them take him?" I screamed at the dashboard.

"He is asleep in the backseat," Mia said.

"They told me they just wanted to talk to you, I swear I did not know she wanted to steal him."

"Where is she taking him, Mia?" Dante interrupted, his voice a low, lethal growl.

Mia hesitated for a long second.

"She is taking him to the old Carter estate," Mia finally admitted.

"She said it was poetic."

The line went completely dead.

Dante slammed his foot on the accelerator.

"We are going home, Elena."
