Chapter 8 - The Hostage

The drive from the South Side steel mill to the Evanston Residential Care Facility took exactly twenty-two terrifying minutes.
Dante drove the armored SUV himself, pushing the heavy vehicle to its absolute limits, running every red light and tearing through intersections with reckless fury.
Emily sat in the passenger seat, gripping the door handle so tightly her knuckles were completely white.
Her usual composed, pragmatic demeanor had shattered entirely.
She was trembling, her eyes wide with a pure, primal terror that broke Dante's heart.
He reached across the center console and placed his large, warm hand firmly over hers.
“We will get him back, Emily,” Dante promised, his voice a low, vibrating vow of absolute violence.
“I will burn the entire city to ash before I let them hurt your brother.”
Emily didn't answer; she just stared blankly at the wet road, tears silently streaming down her face.
They violently breached the front gates of the peaceful, suburban care facility, the tires screeching as the SUV skidded to a halt on the manicured lawn.
Dante kicked his door open, assault rifle raised, completely ignoring the terrified security guards hiding behind the reception desk.
He stormed into the serene, softly lit lobby, followed closely by Marco and his most lethal enforcers.
Standing in the center of the room, holding a suppressed pistol directly to the head of a terrified young man, was the last surviving son of the Moretti family, Julian.
Julian Moretti looked unhinged, his eyes wide and bloodshot, desperate for revenge.
Leo, Emily’s younger brother, was sobbing quietly, completely unable to comprehend the violent reality surrounding him due to his severe schizophrenia.
“Stop right there, Marino!” Julian screamed, pressing the gun harder against Leo's temple.
“Or I blow his brains all over this expensive wallpaper!”
Dante stopped immediately, raising his free hand in a gesture of surrender, his eyes locked entirely on the terrified boy.
Emily pushed past Marco, her heart shattering as she saw her brother in the hands of a monster.
“Leo!” Emily cried out, taking a frantic step forward.
“Stay back, Em!” Julian mocked, recognizing the secretary from the intelligence reports.
“You cost my family everything. Now you get to watch me take everything from you.”
“Let him go, Julian,” Dante commanded coldly, stepping slightly in front of Emily to shield her.
“Your fight is with me. The boy is innocent.”
“Innocent?” Julian laughed wildly. “He is leverage! Drop your weapons, Dante, or I swear to God I will kill him right now!”
Dante did not hesitate for a single fraction of a second.
He unclipped his assault rifle and let it clatter loudly onto the polished hardwood floor.
He drew his sidearm and tossed it away, ordering Marco and the enforcers to do the same.
The massive room fell completely silent as a dozen heavily armed mafia enforcers surrendered their weapons to save the life of their secretary's brother.
Julian smiled, a sick, victorious grin spreading across his face.
“Now, Dante,” Julian sneered, “get on your knees and beg for your pathetic life.”
Dante slowly lowered himself to his knees, his dark eyes never leaving Julian's face.
He was the most feared mafia boss in Chicago, surrendering completely to protect the family of the woman he had just promoted.
Emily watched in absolute awe, realizing that Dante Marino was not the cold, unfeeling monster the world believed him to be.
Julian raised his pistol, aiming it directly at Dante’s forehead, preparing to end the war forever.

Before Julian could pull the trigger, Emily reached into her sensible gray cardigan and pulled out the heavy Montblanc pen she had taken from Dante's desk earlier that day.
With a scream of pure, protective rage, Emily charged forward and jammed the sharp, expensive pen directly into Julian's right eye.
