Chapter 10 - The False Victory

Dante stared at the ringing satellite phone in Marco's trembling hand, the triumphant warmth in his chest instantly turning to ice.

The FBI Director wasn't supposed to be involved; Agent Miller's corruption had been localized and contained by Emily's brilliant digital blackmail.

Dante snatched the phone from Marco, his jaw clenching tightly as he answered the secure line.

"Marino," Dante growled, his voice returning to the cold, lethal authority of a syndicate boss under siege.

"Mr. Marino," a smooth, chillingly calm voice echoed through the speaker. "I must admit, your new CFO is incredibly talented. Hiding three million dollars in a highly publicized charity trust was a masterful stroke of misdirection."

Dante frowned, his dark eyes scanning the ruined lobby.

The voice did not belong to the FBI Director.

It belonged to Clara.

"Clara," Dante breathed, pure venom dripping from his tongue. "You are running out of places to hide."

Clara laughed softly, a terrifying, confident sound that sent a shiver down Dante's spine.

"Oh, Dante. You still think so small," Clara mocked. "While you were busy playing hero at the care facility with your little secretary, you completely abandoned your primary objective."

Emily stepped closer, her pragmatic mind racing to process the terrifying new information.

"What did you do, Clara?" Dante demanded, his hand gripping Emily's shoulder protectively.

"I didn't need the three million dollars, darling," Clara explained patiently, like a teacher speaking to a slow student.

"I needed the distraction. I needed you to leave the steel mill completely undefended."

Dante’s blood ran completely cold.

He had left a dozen unconscious mercenaries at the steel mill, but the real prize was the massive, hidden underground server farm beneath the facility.

"The Moretti family didn't buy that steel mill to use as a fortress," Clara revealed triumphantly.

"They bought it because it sits directly on top of the primary fiber-optic trunk line for the entire Federal Reserve banking system in Chicago."

Emily gasped, realizing the catastrophic scale of Clara's true plan.

"She hasn't just stolen from the syndicate," Emily whispered in horror. "She's currently draining the federal banking reserves. It's a multi-billion dollar heist."

"Exactly," Clara purred over the phone, having heard Emily's brilliant deduction.

"And because your name is officially listed on the digital deed to the steel mill thanks to your CFO's hostile takeover... the FBI believes you are the mastermind behind the largest federal bank robbery in American history."

Dante realized the horrific truth.

Clara hadn't just faked her death and betrayed him.

She had meticulously orchestrated a flawless frame-job that would send him and Emily to federal prison for the rest of their lives, while she disappeared with billions.

"The FBI tactical teams are already surrounding the care facility, Dante," Clara warned with a wicked smile in her voice.

"You have about three minutes before they breach the doors. Good luck explaining the dead bodies in the lobby."

The line went dead, leaving Dante standing in absolute silence as the distant, terrifying wail of federal sirens began to echo through the quiet suburban night.
