Chapter 5 - The Resurrection

Dante stared at the woman standing in the shadows, his weapon hanging uselessly at his side.
The freezing void that had consumed his soul for nine long years shattered into a thousand jagged pieces.
It was impossible.
He had identified her burned body.
He had buried her in the frozen Chicago ground.
He had destroyed half the city seeking vengeance for a murder that apparently never happened.
“Clara?” Dante whispered, his voice cracking with a raw, agonizing vulnerability that no one had heard in a decade.
Clara smiled, a cold, calculating expression that did not reach her beautiful, dark eyes.
“You look terrible, Dante,” she said smoothly, stepping fully into the dim light of the unfinished office.
“Nine years of mourning clearly hasn't suited you.”
Dante took a slow, trembling step forward.
“How are you alive? The car bomb...”
“Was entirely necessary,” Clara interrupted, her voice completely devoid of any warmth or affection.
“The Moretti family offered me ten million dollars and a new identity to provide them with the blueprints to your entire operation.”
Dante felt the floor drop out from beneath his feet.
His wife hadn't been murdered by a rival family.
She had faked her own death to betray him, walking away with a fortune while leaving him to suffer in an endless, suffocating hell.
“You sold me out?” Dante breathed, the initial shock rapidly hardening into a devastating, explosive fury.
“It was just business, darling,” Clara shrugged carelessly.
“But unfortunately, the Morettis squandered the advantage I gave them. You destroyed their empire, and the FBI eventually seized my offshore accounts.”
She pulled a suppressed pistol from her trench coat, aiming it directly at Dante’s chest.
“I came back to collect the three million dollars Sal stole for me. But it seems your new secretary already moved the funds.”
Dante’s dark eyes hardened into cold, lethal obsidian.
The grieving husband vanished entirely, replaced once again by the ruthless, terrifying Don of the Marino Syndicate.
“If you touch Emily, I will kill you myself,” Dante promised, his voice a low, vibrating growl of absolute menace.
Clara laughed, a harsh, grating sound that echoed off the concrete walls.
“Oh, Dante. Still trying to play the heroic protector.”
She pointed the gun slightly to the left and fired a single, silenced shot.
The bullet struck Sal directly in the center of his forehead, killing the treacherous capo instantly.
Dante didn't even flinch at the execution.
“I don't need Sal anymore,” Clara stated coldly. “I need you to open the digital charity trust and wire the money to my new account. Or I will go upstairs and put a bullet in your efficient little secretary's head.”
Before Dante could raise his weapon, a massive, deafening explosion rocked the floor directly above them.
The concrete ceiling cracked, raining thick dust and debris down on them.
The fire alarms resumed their frantic, piercing wailing.
Clara stumbled backward, losing her balance in her expensive high heels.
Dante didn't hesitate.
He lunged forward, disarming her with a brutal, precise strike to her wrist and pinning her hard against the concrete pillar.
“What did you do?” Dante roared over the noise of the alarms.
“I didn't do anything!” Clara screamed in genuine panic, struggling violently against his iron grip.

Dante realized the explosion had come from his executive suite on the forty-second floor.
Emily was trapped inside.
