Chapter 1 - The Architect

The heavy footsteps echoing behind me were deliberate and entirely out of place in a restaurant secured by my own soldiers.
I did not turn around immediately.
Power had taught me long ago that reacting too quickly was a fatal sign of weakness.
Elena kept her chin high, her beautiful face carved from pure, unadulterated defiance.
A man stepped into the soft candlelight, placing a protective hand on the back of Elena’s chair.
He wore a bespoke charcoal suit that radiated quiet, dangerous money.
His eyes were the color of winter ice, and they locked onto mine with an absolute, chilling certainty.
"Dominic Valenti," the stranger said smoothly.
"My name is Julian Vance."
The name struck a harsh chord in my memory.
Julian Vance was a ghost in the underworld, a billionaire fixer who bought and sold entire governments.
I glanced at Marco, who had his hand resting subtly over the holster beneath his jacket.
"This building is closed, Mister Vance," I said, my voice dangerously low.
Julian offered a cold, predatory smile.
"Actually, this building was just purchased by my holding company ten minutes ago."
He pulled out a folded document and tossed it onto the pristine white tablecloth.
"I own the restaurant, I own the ground beneath it, and I own the security cameras currently recording your men."
Elena did not flinch, her hand gently stroking the dark curls of the little girl who was busy coloring.
"Julian is my husband, Dominic," Elena said, the words twisting a jagged knife deep in my gut.
I stared at the little girl, Aria, whose Valenti eyes were focused on her purple crayon.
"She has my eyes," I growled, taking a step forward.
Julian stepped between us, his posture relaxed but completely lethal.
"She has her mother's heart, which is all that matters," Julian replied.
I pulled out my phone, ready to order my men to drag this man into the alley.
"If you touch her, I will burn your empire to the ashes," I warned him.
Julian leaned in close, his voice dropping to a whisper meant only for me.
"You should be more concerned about your own bloodline, Dominic."
He tapped his watch.
"The medical records you saw five years ago were faked by your own father to force you into abandoning her."
My chest tightened as the gravity of his words crashed over me.

Before I could even process the betrayal of my own family, the glass window behind Elena shattered into a thousand pieces.
A red sniper laser painted a dead-center target directly on the little girl's chest.
