Chapter 7 - The Loading Dock

The freight elevator began its slow, agonizing descent toward the ground floor, the old gears grinding loudly in the dark shaft.

Gabriel handed Leo carefully to Mia, ensuring the baby was securely strapped to her chest with the canvas sling.

"When those doors open, you do not stop running until you reach the armored cash-in-transit truck parked in bay four," Gabriel instructed her fiercely.

"I am not leaving you behind to die," Mia argued, her voice trembling but filled with absolute, stubborn defiance.

Gabriel reached out and gently cupped her cheek, his thumb brushing lightly over the dried rain on her skin.

"You are going to survive, Mia, because I finally found something in this dark world worth protecting," he whispered softly.

Before she could process his stunning confession, the elevator hit the ground floor with a heavy, metallic thud.

The doors slid open, revealing a massive, dimly lit loading dock swarming with at least twenty of Sterling's heavily armed men.

Gabriel and Marco instantly stepped out, unleashing a devastating storm of coordinated gunfire that immediately dropped the front line of mercenaries.

The loading dock erupted into absolute chaos, the air filling with thick gray smoke, deafening explosions, and the smell of burning gunpowder.

Gabriel was a terrifying force of nature, moving flawlessly between concrete pillars and laying down precise, lethal fire to protect Mia's path.

Mia kept her head down, sprinting blindly through the crossfire with her arms wrapped protectively around the sleeping baby.

She reached the heavy, armored cash-in-transit truck in bay four, but the heavy steel doors were securely locked.

She dropped to her knees, pulling her father's lockpicking kit from her boot with shaking, bloodstained hands.

Bullets sparked wildly against the armor plating of the truck just inches above her head as she desperately worked the complex tumblers.

"Come on, come on," she muttered frantically, twisting the tension wrench until she heard the satisfying, heavy click of the lock disengaging.

She threw the door open, climbed into the driver's seat, and quickly hotwired the ignition beneath the steering column.

The massive diesel engine roared to life just as Gabriel and Marco fell back toward the vehicle, covering their desperate retreat.

Marco jumped into the back of the truck, laying down heavy suppression fire through the rear gun ports.

Gabriel leaped into the passenger seat, his suit torn and completely covered in concrete dust and enemy blood.

"Drive!" Gabriel yelled, and Mia slammed her foot onto the accelerator with every ounce of strength she possessed.

The massive armored truck smashed violently through the closed steel loading doors, bursting out into the freezing Chicago night.

They successfully escaped the ambush, but the dashboard clock glowed brightly, warning them that they had less than thirty minutes to reach Sterling's estate before midnight.

Mia tightened her grip on the steering wheel, her eyes narrowing with fierce determination as she drove the heavy vehicle toward absolute war.

"I am going with you to save Sarah," Mia declared firmly, refusing to be left behind ever again.
