Chapter 4 - The Ransom Demand

The silence in the concrete apartment was so absolute that Mia could hear the rain tapping violently against the reinforced windows.
Gabriel stared at the glowing computer screen, his mind struggling to accept the impossible betrayal staring back at him.
"Sarah would never put a tracking device on her own infant son," Gabriel declared, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, contained fury.
"She didn't do it," Marco agreed quietly, pulling a heavily modified assault rifle from a hidden weapons locker.
"Sterling must have compromised Sarah's new security detail while you were distracted by the warehouse attack."
Gabriel grabbed his own weapons, his movements precise, lethal, and completely devoid of any hesitation.
He was preparing to wage a full-scale war on his own brother's estate.
Before Gabriel could formulate a tactical breach plan, the secure computer terminal chimed loudly with an incoming video transmission.
Mia hesitated for a fraction of a second before hitting the command key to accept the forced connection.
The screen flickered to life, revealing the arrogant, smiling face of Damian Sterling sitting comfortably behind a massive mahogany desk.
"Good evening, Gabriel," Sterling mocked smoothly, taking a slow sip from a crystal glass of whiskey.
"I see you managed to survive the little welcoming party I sent to the brownstone."
Gabriel leaned close to the camera, his dark eyes radiating a promise of unimaginable violence.
"If you have touched one single hair on Sarah's head, I will personally burn you alive," Gabriel promised softly.
Sterling laughed, casually adjusting the cuffs of his expensive, tailored suit.
The camera angle shifted slightly, revealing Sarah Romano tied securely to a wooden chair, weeping silently with a gun pressed directly to her temple.
Gabriel's jaw clenched so tightly that Mia genuinely thought his teeth might shatter.
"I am a reasonable businessman, Gabriel, so I am offering you a very simple trade," Sterling proposed.
"You will officially sign over the entire Romano shipping empire to my holding company by midnight tonight."
Gabriel did not even blink at the outrageous financial demand.
"Consider it done," Gabriel agreed instantly, completely willing to trade a billion-dollar empire for his family's safety.
Sterling smiled a wicked, predatory smile, shaking his head slowly in mock disappointment.
"That is only the first half of my demand, Gabriel," Sterling continued smoothly.
"Your little accountant managed to steal a very specific digital drive from my warehouse manager's office before she stole the truck."
Mia felt her heart drop into her stomach, suddenly remembering the small, black USB stick she had blindly shoved into her pocket during her frantic escape.
"I want my property back, and I want you to deliver the accountant to me personally," Sterling demanded.

Gabriel's expression turned entirely unreadable as he stared directly into the camera.
"You will never lay a hand on her," Gabriel stated firmly, before pulling his pistol and shooting the computer monitor entirely to pieces.
