Chapter 9 - The Final Push

The ambulance sped down the highway with its sirens blaring into the night. The intense pain of early labor consumed every single nerve in my broken body. The paramedics worked frantically to monitor my baby's dangerously erratic heartbeat. They assured me that we were only minutes away from the best trauma center in the state. I gripped the metal side rails of the stretcher, pushing through the agony for my child. We arrived at the emergency bay, and I was immediately rushed into a sterile delivery room. A team of specialized doctors surrounded my bed, shouting urgent medical terms. They explained that the stress and the physical trauma had forced my body into a critical state. I had to push with everything I had, or both of us might not survive the delivery. I closed my eyes and pictured the terrifying glowing iron bar in the garage. I used every ounce of hatred I held for my husband to fuel my physical strength. I pushed until my vision went completely black and my lungs felt like they would burst. The pain reached an absolute, blinding peak before suddenly vanishing into thin air. I fell backward onto the pillows, gasping for breath in the sudden silence of the room. The silence stretched on for what felt like an eternity. I did not hear the beautiful, expected sound of a newborn baby crying. I opened my eyes and saw the doctors clustered tightly around a tiny table in the corner. My heart shattered as I begged them to tell me if my baby was alive. The lead doctor turned around with a massive, exhausted smile on her face. She stepped aside to reveal a tiny, perfect baby boy wrapped securely in a warm blanket. He let out a loud, aggressive wail that was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard. They laid him gently on my chest, avoiding the thick bandages wrapping my stomach. I cried tears of pure, unadulterated joy as I kissed his soft, perfect forehead.
