Chapter 10 - The Happy Ending

Two years passed since the horrific nightmare in the dark garage finally ended. My husband and his cruel mother were sentenced to sixty years in a federal maximum-security prison. Judge Victoria was stripped of her title and locked away for her massive web of corruption. I was awarded full ownership of the house, the bank accounts, and a massive victim compensation fund. My burns had slowly healed into pale scars that I viewed as permanent badges of my survival. My son grew into a healthy, incredibly happy toddler with bright eyes and a beautiful laugh. I sold the house with the terrible garage and bought a stunning, sunlit home near the ocean. David completely recovered from his injuries and became a permanent, beloved uncle to my son. We spent our weekends building sandcastles, entirely free from fear and pain. I finally possessed the peaceful, loving, and wealthy life I had always fought to protect. One evening, I put my son to sleep in his cozy, starlit nursery. I walked downstairs to pour myself a quiet glass of wine in my beautiful new kitchen. The doorbell rang unexpectedly, echoing through the large, silent house. I opened the heavy front door to find a small, unmarked cardboard box resting on the welcome mat. I brought the box inside and carefully cut the thick packing tape with a kitchen knife. Inside the box was a single, crystal-clear photograph of my son sleeping in his crib taken from inside my house. My cell phone buzzed instantly with a text from an unknown number. The message read that my husband's father had just been released from prison, and he wanted his grandson back.
