Chapter 5 - The Blood Price

The thick leather restraint finally snapped with a dull thud.

I quickly switched the scalpel to my freed hand and viciously sliced through the left strap.

Julian was entirely distracted by Chloe’s violent, dramatic seizure on the floor.

The panicked medical staff shouted over each other as they desperately tried to stabilize the young woman.

I silently swung my heavy legs over the edge of the elevated hospital bed.

My bare, trembling feet hit the freezing cold linoleum floor.

A fresh, blinding contraction hit me, forcing me to bite down hard on my own hand to stifle a scream.

I reached out and grabbed a heavy metal oxygen tank resting against the wall.

Julian finally turned around to check on the progress of my surgery.

His eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror when he saw me standing entirely free.

Before he could shout a warning to the guards, I swung the oxygen tank with every ounce of my remaining strength.

The heavy metal cylinder collided directly with the side of his perfectly groomed skull.

Julian crumpled instantly to the floor like a broken puppet with cut strings.

The lead surgeon gasped loudly and backed away against the wall, raising his hands in terrified surrender.

Chloe immediately stopped convulsing and opened her eyes.

She sat up calmly, meticulously dusting off her expensive designer skirt.

"Nice swing," Chloe smirked, wiping fake foam from her lips.

"Now let's get out of here before his father's armed goons realize what just happened."

We rushed out of the bloody operating room and into the sterile, brightly lit hallway.

The entire clinic wing was eerily and terrifyingly deserted.

Arthur Vance had clearly cleared the entire floor to maintain total secrecy for my murder.

We pushed hard through the heavy double doors leading to the concrete stairwell.

"Why are you actually helping me?" I panted as we descended the steep steps.

Chloe checked the ammunition clip of a small silver handgun she pulled from her designer purse.

"Because Julian promised me the entire world," she spat bitterly.

"But I found out he secretly took out a ten-million-dollar life insurance policy on me yesterday afternoon."

She looked back at me with dead, serious, unforgiving eyes.

"He needed your baby for the trust fund, and my staged death for the quick cash."

We reached the bottom floor and threw open the heavy metal exit door.

The damp, freezing night air hit my sweaty face like a physical blow.

We were standing in a dark, secluded alleyway directly behind the private clinic.

Suddenly, the blinding high beams of a massive black SUV snapped on.

The armored vehicle aggressively blocked the only exit from the narrow brick alley.

The tinted driver's side window slowly and menacingly rolled down.

Arthur Vance stared intensely at us through the creeping darkness.

"Did you really think it would be that incredibly easy, ladies?" the billionaire mocked cruelly.

He slowly raised a suppressed pistol and aimed it directly at my swollen belly.
