Chapter 9 - The Federal Takedown

The sound of my husband and mother-in-law viciously turning on each other echoed across the front lawn.

I stood safely behind the armored suburban, shielding my children's eyes from the chaotic scene unfolding in our home.

The federal marshals aggressively hauled Victor out of the broken doorway in heavy steel handcuffs.

Victor did not struggle or shout; he simply stared at me with a cold, calculating promise of future revenge.

He was shoved into the back of a secure transport vehicle, his dangerous presence finally removed from our lives.

Moments later, Evan was dragged out in handcuffs, sobbing loudly and begging the agents for mercy.

He looked toward me with pathetic, tear-filled eyes, hoping I would somehow intervene on his behalf.

I turned my back on him completely, wrapping my arms tighter around Maddie and Mason.

Marsha was the last one escorted out, fighting wildly against the female marshal gripping her arm.

"This house belongs to my son!" Marsha screamed wildly, completely detached from reality.

Diane, my brilliant attorney, stepped directly into Marsha's path and held up her digital tablet.

"We have already reviewed the audio recordings your son so graciously provided, Marsha," Diane stated coldly.

"You are facing twenty years in a federal penitentiary for conspiracy, forgery, and domestic terrorism."

Marsha’s face drained of all color, and her knees finally buckled under the weight of her absolute defeat.

She was tossed unceremoniously into the back of a squad car, her reign of terror permanently ended.

Diane walked over to me, her stern professional expression softening into a warm, genuine smile.

"The Department of Defense has officially secured the decryption drive," Diane informed me quietly.

"In exchange for returning the classified technology, the government has authorized a massive payout to your family's trust."

I let out a breathless laugh, completely overwhelmed by the sudden, massive shift in our reality.

We were not just safe from the monsters; we were financially secure for the rest of our lives.

The lead federal marshal approached us, holding a sleek, secure cell phone in his gloved hand.

"Ma'am, my commanding officer would like to speak with you regarding your late husband's file," the marshal said respectfully.

I took the phone with a trembling hand and pressed it slowly to my ear.

"This is Sarah," I answered, expecting a stern government bureaucrat.

The voice on the other end of the line was deeply distorted, masked by heavy encryption software.

"The threat has been neutralized, but your house is no longer a secure location," the voice warned.

"Who is this?" I demanded, my heart suddenly racing with a new, unexplainable anxiety.

"You need to pack a bag and take the children to the safehouse David prepared in the mountains," the voice instructed urgently.

I froze completely as the strange voice used my first husband's name with profound familiarity.

"How do you know about David's safehouse?" I asked, a chill running violently down my spine.

"Because I helped him build it," the distorted voice replied.
