Chapter 5 - The Hidden Truth

The revelation hit me with the force of a speeding freight train.

My first husband, David, had been a brilliant cybersecurity engineer before his sudden, tragic death.

He had purchased this house specifically because it was completely off the grid and incredibly secure.

I watched in horror as Victor's men began smashing holes into my beautiful drywall with heavy crowbars.

Evan scrambled to his feet, his face pale with a mixture of betrayal and profound confusion.

"My mother told me this land was perfectly zoned for a luxury shopping center," Evan stammered foolishly.

Victor did not even bother to look at my husband as he answered.

"Your mother is a ruthless opportunist who used your debt as an excuse to steal a multi-million dollar tech prototype," Victor explained.

I remembered the thick envelope my estate attorney had given me, which was still sitting safely in my purse.

The attorney had told me it contained the final trust documents regarding David's estate.

I suddenly realized there might be far more than just property records hidden inside that heavy envelope.

"Whatever David built, it belongs to my children," I yelled over the sound of breaking drywall.

Victor smiled condescendingly and shook his head.

"David built a decryption drive capable of bypassing federal banking firewalls," Victor revealed calmly.

"My organization paid him ten million dollars to design it, but he hid it right before he died."

I felt sick to my stomach, realizing that my sweet, brilliant David had been involved with these dangerous criminals.

One of the bodyguards shouted from the hallway, holding up a small, metallic lockbox covered in plaster dust.

He had pulled it directly out from behind the master bedroom wall.

Victor's eyes lit up with greedy satisfaction as the man handed him the dusty lockbox.

"Finally, our investment has been recovered," Victor murmured, tracing the metal edges.

He pulled a small explosive breaching charge from his pocket and attached it to the lock.

"I would highly suggest covering your ears," Victor warned us casually.

The small charge detonated with a sharp, deafening crack, blowing the lock completely off the box.

Victor eagerly flipped the lid open to claim his stolen prize.

His triumphant smile vanished instantly, replaced by a look of absolute, murderous fury.

The lockbox was completely empty, save for a single piece of folded notebook paper.

Victor unfolded the paper, and his face turned an ugly shade of dark purple.

"Where is it?" Victor roared, throwing the empty box violently across the room.

He lunged forward and grabbed me by the throat, lifting me slightly off the floor.

"Read it," he hissed, shoving the piece of notebook paper directly into my face.

I struggled to breathe as I read the messy, childish handwriting on the page.

It was a note from my six-year-old son, Mason, that read: "I put Daddy's shiny block inside my turtle to keep it safe."
