Chapter 10 - The False Victory

Vincent threw his body completely over Sofia, bracing for the massive explosion.

He squeezed his eyes shut, waiting for the mountain to erupt in a fireball of toxic gas.

One second passed.

Two seconds passed.

Nothing happened.

The mountain remained perfectly silent, and the mine did not explode.

Charles frantically pressed the button on the detonator again and again, his face turning pale with absolute panic.

“Why isn't it working?!” Charles screamed furiously at his mercenaries.

A cold, mocking laugh echoed from the tree line above them.

“Because I cut the blasting wires ten minutes ago, you arrogant fool,” a new voice announced.

Dozens of heavily armed men stepped out of the snowy woods, completely surrounding Charles and his SUVs.

They were not police officers, and they were not Charles’s men.

They were wearing the distinct, terrifying tactical gear of the Moretti Syndicate.

Leading the strike team was Grace Carter, the supposedly timid housekeeper, holding a high-powered sniper rifle.

Vincent stared in absolute shock as his loyal soldiers disarmed Charles’s mercenaries effortlessly.

Grace walked down the snowy hill and offered Vincent a respectful, knowing smile.

“Emily told me you were arrested, sir,” Grace explained smoothly.

“I immediately mobilized the loyalist captains to track Dominic’s car and provide backup.”

Charles dropped the useless detonator into the snow, dropping to his knees in total, pathetic defeat.

The war was officially over.

Vincent had reclaimed his empire, rescued his missing wife, and utterly destroyed his traitorous enemies.

He carried Sofia back to the safety of the armored SUVs, feeling an overwhelming sense of profound victory.

They drove back to the estate, where Sofia was immediately treated by the best private doctors money could buy.

Days passed in a blur of joyful reunions and aggressive legal restructurings.

Charles and Isabella were permanently dealt with according to the brutal, unspoken laws of the syndicate.

The estate was peaceful once again, filled with the warmth of a fully restored family.

Vincent sat in his study one quiet evening, watching the snow fall gently outside the massive windows.

Sofia walked into the room, looking significantly healthier, wearing a beautiful silk robe.

She walked over and wrapped her arms lovingly around his shoulders from behind.

“You saved my life, Vince,” Sofia whispered softly, kissing his cheek.

“I would burn the world down to find you,” Vincent replied, holding her hand.

He felt entirely at peace, completely confident that the nightmare was forever behind them.

He stood up to pour them both a glass of celebratory wine.

As he turned his back, Sofia casually walked over to his massive mahogany desk.

She smoothly picked up his unlocked, secure cell phone and began scrolling through his encrypted contacts.

Vincent turned around, holding two glasses of expensive red wine, smiling warmly at his beloved wife.

He didn't notice the cold, calculating, completely dead expression that briefly flashed across Sofia’s face.

He also didn't notice that the silver pendant she was now wearing was the exact same blue stone Charles had given to Isabella.
