Chapter 12 - The Breach

The shockwave threw me violently to the floor, my ears ringing with a high-pitched scream that drowned out the ensuing chaos.

Dominic moved with terrifying speed, diving across the room to shield my body with his own as bullets began tearing through the walls.

"We are completely compromised!" he roared into a tactical radio pulled from his jacket, hauling me to my feet by my waist.

"Where is Noah?" I screamed over the deafening gunfire, my heart completely stopping at the thought of the little boy alone upstairs.

"Tyler's room!" Dominic shouted, dragging me into the hallway as his loyal guards engaged heavily armed mercenaries in masks.

We sprinted up the grand staircase, dodging falling marble and splintered wood, the pristine mansion transforming into a brutal warzone.

I kicked open the nursery door to find Tyler, still recovering from his heart surgery, shielding Noah in the corner of the closet.

"Take my hand!" I ordered Tyler, grabbing Noah into my arms while Dominic provided heavy suppressive fire from the doorway.

Dominic led us toward a hidden biometric panel behind a massive oil painting, pressing his bloody thumb against the scanner.

The wall seamlessly slid open, revealing a heavily fortified elevator that plummeted us deep into the bedrock beneath the estate.

The descent was agonizingly silent, the heavy steel doors cutting off the terrifying sounds of the slaughter happening above us.

Noah buried his face into my neck, trembling violently, while Tyler leaned against the steel wall, completely out of breath and pale.

"Who are they?" I asked Dominic, my voice shaking as I wiped a streak of blood from my forehead.

"They are the Volkov cartel," Dominic replied grimly, reloading his weapon with mechanical precision. "And they are not here for me, Clara. They are here for you."

The elevator jolted to a halt, opening into a massive, state-of-the-art underground bunker equipped with medical bays and weapon armories.

"If my father faked his death to hide us, how did they find me?" I demanded, the pieces of the puzzle feeling entirely wrong.

"Because whoever sent you that photograph this morning also attached a tracking device to the envelope," Dominic stated coldly.

My blood ran absolutely cold as I realized my own desperate need for answers had led an army of killers directly to our doorstep.

"We are safe down here for now," Dominic assured me, walking over to a massive bank of security monitors.

But as the screens flickered to life, showing the mercenaries systematically executing Dominic's men, I knew safety was a temporary illusion.

I was no longer just a civilian caught in the crossfire; I was the daughter of a mafia king, and the war was officially mine.
