Chapter 8 - The Burning Cabin

The massive fire illuminated the dark night sky, casting a terrifying orange glow over the entire private estate.
I screamed in absolute horror, watching the flames aggressively consume the wooden structure of the old hunting cabin.
My father-in-law had never planned on negotiating an escape, he had set a timed fuse before he ever left the property.
David slammed the SUV through the heavy iron gates without bothering to punch in the security codes.
We tore across the manicured lawn, leaving deep, muddy tire tracks across the expensive landscaping.
David stopped the vehicle a safe distance from the blazing cabin and completely ignored the massive heat radiating toward us.
He grabbed a heavy fire extinguisher from the trunk and ordered his agents to establish a safe perimeter.
I jumped out of the passenger seat, ignoring the intense smoke burning my eyes and lungs.
I ran toward the front porch, screaming Max’s name at the top of my lungs over the roaring sound of the fire.
David grabbed me by the waist, forcefully pulling me back from the dangerous, collapsing wooden structure.
He told me it was complete suicide to enter the building, but I completely refused to give up on our family dog.
I heard a faint, desperate barking sound coming from the back corner of the burning cabin.
The sound filled me with an impossible amount of adrenaline and absolute, reckless determination.
I violently ripped myself out of David’s grip and sprinted around to the side window of the cabin.
I grabbed a heavy garden stone from the flowerbed and smashed the thick glass window into a million tiny pieces.
Thick, black smoke instantly poured out of the broken window, temporarily blinding me in the darkness.
I pulled my coat over my mouth and leaned into the dangerous heat, desperately searching the smoky room.
I could barely see the outline of a heavy steel cage sitting in the center of the burning floorboards.
Max was inside, spinning in panicked circles and barking frantically at the terrifying flames surrounding him.
I began to climb through the jagged glass of the broken window, completely ignoring the sharp cuts on my hands.
David suddenly appeared right beside me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist and violently yanking me backward.
He yelled that the roof was completely unstable and was going to collapse at any given second.
I fought him with everything I had, screaming that I was not going to let our innocent dog burn to death.

Just as David pulled me safely away from the exterior wall, a massive, deafening crack echoed through the night.
The entire blazing roof of the hunting cabin violently collapsed inward, completely burying the room where Max was trapped.
