Chapter 5 - The Mountain Ambush

The deafening sound of shattering glass sent me diving to the floorboards of the heavy SUV.
David expertly maneuvered the vehicle backward, narrowly avoiding a second sniper bullet that struck the hood.
He slammed the truck into a deep ditch, using the heavy metal frame as a shield against the incoming fire.
We were completely pinned down in the dark forest, totally outgunned by the corrupt police officers.
David barked orders into his radio, demanding that the tactical backup teams hurry to our exact coordinates.
The sound of heavy gunfire echoed through the trees as the corrupt officers tried to flush us out.
I squeezed my eyes shut, praying that my daughter was still safe at the heavily guarded federal safe house.
I knew that if we died on this mountain, nobody would be left to save our innocent dog.
David peeked over the dashboard and fired three rapid shots into the tree line to keep the sniper guessing.
He turned to me, his face bleeding slightly from a tiny scratch caused by the broken windshield glass.
He told me to stay perfectly still and keep my head below the heavy steel doors no matter what happened.
Suddenly, the unmistakable sound of federal helicopter blades chopping through the cold mountain air roared above us.
A massive spotlight descended from the sky, illuminating the dense forest in a blinding halo of white light.
The federal air support had finally arrived, completely shifting the balance of power in a matter of seconds.
Heavily armed federal tactical agents began repelling down from the helicopters directly into the enemy positions.
The corrupt local officers immediately began to panic, dropping their weapons and attempting to run into the woods.
David kicked his door open and sprinted toward the burning police cruiser, fully taking command of the chaotic situation.
I cautiously raised my head above the dashboard, watching the federal agents round up the treacherous local cops.
Within ten minutes, the entire ambush was neutralized, and the perimeter was officially declared secure.
David marched back to the SUV, holstering his weapon and wiping the sweat from his forehead.
He grabbed his radio and ordered the remaining teams to breach the old lumber mill located just up the hill.
We followed the tactical team on foot, walking past the defeated local officers sitting in heavy handcuffs.
The massive wooden doors of the lumber mill were chained shut from the inside, but the agents easily blew them open.

As the thick smoke from the breach cleared, a horrific and completely unexpected sight greeted us inside the mill.
The fighting cages were completely empty, and sitting quietly in the center of the dirt ring was my father-in-law.
