Chapter 6 - The Final Leverage

My father-in-law sat in a cheap folding chair, looking completely out of place in his expensive tailored suit.
He had a terrifyingly calm expression on his face, entirely unbothered by the dozens of federal weapons pointed at him.
David stepped forward, his eyes narrowed in extreme suspicion as he demanded to know where the dog was located.
My father-in-law let out a slow, arrogant laugh that echoed through the massive, empty lumber mill.
He explained that the corrupt police officers were just a temporary distraction he had purchased with his vast wealth.
He proudly confessed that he had personally driven the dog away from this location nearly an hour ago.
I pushed past the federal agents, my absolute rage completely overpowering any sense of fear I had left.
I screamed at him, demanding to know what he had done with our sweet, innocent Max.
He looked directly at me with eyes full of pure malice and absolute contempt for my existence.
He said that if he could not teach my daughter a lesson about respect, he would teach me a lesson about power.
He slowly reached into his suit jacket, causing the federal agents to aggressively raise their rifles and shout warnings.
My father-in-law smiled mockingly and pulled out a small, remote digital detonator with a glowing red button.
He announced that Max was currently locked inside a metal cage surrounded by highly explosive material.
If anyone attempted to arrest him or shoot him, his thumb would slip from the dead man's switch and detonate the bomb.
David ordered everyone to hold their fire, knowing that a desperate man with a trigger was incredibly unpredictable.
My father-in-law demanded a fully fueled helicopter and a guaranteed safe passage out of the country.
He promised that once he was in international airspace, he would reveal the exact location of the trapped dog.
I felt my heart completely shatter, realizing that this monster was willing to blow up an innocent animal just to escape justice.
David slowly lowered his weapon, pretending to carefully consider the outrageous demands of the cornered billionaire.
I watched David subtly tap his fingers against the side of his radio, silently signaling his tactical sniper team.
My father-in-law noticed the movement and aggressively squeezed the detonator, threatening to end it all right now.
Suddenly, a loud and unexpected ringing noise echoed from inside my father-in-law's jacket pocket.
It was his personal cell phone, completely interrupting his dramatic and deadly standoff.

He hesitated for a fraction of a second, instinctively glancing down toward the annoying noise.
That single moment of distraction was the only opening David needed to completely change the game.
