Chapter 1 - The Locked Door

Michael Carter pulled hard on the locked glass door of the police station.
His face twisted from a mask of polite concern into a scowl of pure rage.
Officer Daniel Reed stood his ground on the other side of the glass.
He rested his hand casually on his duty belt to send a clear message.
"Open this door immediately," Michael shouted through the thick safety glass.
"My daughters are inside and they require my urgent medical attention."
Daniel glanced back at Emma, who was fiercely shielding her sister behind the front counter.
"An ambulance is already on the way, Dr. Carter," Daniel replied calmly.
"You can follow the paramedics to the hospital when they arrive."
Michael slammed his heavy fist against the reinforced glass.
"I am a licensed physician and I demand to see my children right now."
Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder as the ambulance finally approached the station.
Daniel refused to break eye contact with the furious man standing outside in the rain.
He knew something was deeply wrong with the father's conflicting story.
The ambulance screeched into the parking lot, partially blocking Michael's dark SUV.
Two paramedics jumped out with a heavy medical bag and a collapsible stretcher.
Daniel quickly unlocked the secure side entrance to let the medical team inside.
He instructed them to evaluate Olivia without letting Michael enter the building.
The lead paramedic took one look at Olivia's pale face and immediately frowned.
"Her heart rate is dangerously low and her pupils are completely pinpoint," the paramedic said.
"We need to get her to the emergency room before her respiratory system entirely fails."
Daniel picked up the sealed evidence envelope containing the empty plastic syringe.
"Take them out through the back loading dock so the father cannot intercept you," Daniel ordered.
He escorted the rushing paramedics and the two girls toward the rear exit of the station.
Emma gripped Daniel's hand tightly as they hurried down the fluorescent hallway.
"He is going to punish us for telling you," Emma whispered with absolute terror in her voice.
"I will not let him touch you," Daniel promised sincerely.
Just as they reached the heavy metal back doors, Daniel's police radio crackled to life.
The authoritative voice on the radio belonged to the local Chief of Police.
"Officer Reed, this is a direct order to release those girls to their father immediately."

Daniel froze in his tracks as he realized how far Michael's dark influence truly reached.
The Chief added, "Dr. Carter is a personal friend of the mayor, and you are currently committing federal kidnapping."
