Chapter 8 - The Ransom

Lorenzo stood entirely frozen in the empty, gas-filled panic room, the heavy realization of Richard Hail’s incredibly complex scheme crushing him like a physical weight.
Hail hadn't just planned a hostile takeover of the lucrative waterfront; he had meticulously orchestrated a completely flawless, highly targeted kidnapping from inside the Duca estate.
Rocco aggressively stormed into the underground bunker, deeply out of breath, carrying a completely untraceable, heavy black satellite phone he had found resting deliberately on the library desk upstairs.
The phone rang with a sharp, incredibly piercing electronic tone that echoed loudly through the damp, subterranean stone walls.
Lorenzo snatched the heavy device from Rocco’s massive hand, violently pressing it to his ear without uttering a single word.
Richard Hail’s deeply arrogant, aristocratic voice floated clearly through the secure connection, heavily layered with completely undisguised, highly sadistic smugness.
Hail cheerfully confirmed that he currently held Elena and the three-year-old child completely secure in an undisclosed, highly fortified location outside the city.
He calmly stated that the massive explosion at the harbor had actually cost him a significant amount of highly expensive mercenary blood, but he was willing to completely overlook the violent insult.
He demanded that Lorenzo officially, entirely sign over all remaining legal deeds, heavily encrypted offshore accounts, and absolute control of the Boston syndicate within the next hour.
If Lorenzo refused or attempted to violently retaliate, Hail coldly promised to mail Mia’s worn stuffed bunny back to the estate, completely covered in her mother’s blood.
Lorenzo felt a deeply primal, utterly violent rage violently completely consume his entire soul, but he heavily forced his voice to remain completely steady and absolutely cold.
He agreed to the outrageous terms without a single moment of hesitation, demanding a completely secure, highly public location for the immediate exchange of the legal documents.
Hail laughed softly, clearly thoroughly enjoying his absolute dominance over the city’s most feared, entirely untouchable criminal boss.
He instructed Lorenzo to come completely alone and entirely unarmed to the highly abandoned, heavily rusted steel mill located deep in the industrial district.
Lorenzo hung up the heavy satellite phone, his sharp eyes completely locking onto Rocco with a deeply terrifying, highly calculating intensity.
He quietly ordered Rocco to heavily mobilize absolutely every single loyal man they had left in the entire city, entirely disregarding any previous notions of stealth or subtlety.
He wasn't going to surrender his massive empire, and he absolutely wasn't going to let Richard Hail walk away from this incredibly violent insult alive.
As they quickly ascended the spiraling stone stairs back to the main level, a highly unexpected, deeply alarming sound echoed loudly from the mansion’s grand foyer.
It was the heavy, rhythmic thud of highly polished leather boots slowly walking across the expensive imported marble floor.
Lorenzo aggressively raised his assault rifle, fully expecting to find another team of heavily armed Hail mercenaries violently breaching his home.
Instead, he found his younger brother, Marco, standing entirely alone in the center of the grand hall, entirely covered in dark soot and dried blood from the harbor explosion.

Marco slowly dropped his heavy weapon onto the marble floor and completely raised his empty hands in a clear, highly unexpected gesture of total surrender.
He looked directly at Lorenzo, his eyes filled with a deep, entirely surprising remorse, and firmly stated that he knew exactly where Richard Hail was hiding the hostages.
