Chapter 2 - The Mandate

Lorenzo carried the trembling three-year-old down the grand, sweeping staircase, his mind racing with a terrifying, cold fury he hadn't felt in years.

He brought Mia into the absolute sanctuary of his private, oak-paneled study, a heavily guarded room where not even his most trusted capos dared enter unannounced.

He gently set the little girl down on the edge of his massive mahogany desk, right next to a silver tray of expensive imported chocolates.

Mia sniffled quietly, clutching her worn stuffed bunny tightly as she watched the most dangerous man in Boston pace the floor like a caged tiger.

Lorenzo grabbed his encrypted, untraceable phone from the desk drawer and hit a single speed-dial button.

His most trusted lieutenant, Rocco, answered on the very first ring, his gruff voice instantly alert to the tension in his boss's silence.

Lorenzo issued a lethal, shockingly quiet mandate that made even the hardened mob enforcer pause for a fraction of a second.

He ordered Rocco to pull every single file, hidden bank statement, illegal wiretap, and visitor log ever associated with Vivien.

He wanted his men to track every single second she had ever been left completely alone with Elena and Mia over the past three months.

Rocco hesitated briefly, respectfully asking if this massive, highly invasive investigation truly concerned his future wife.

Lorenzo looked at the terrified little girl sitting on his desk and coldly confirmed that Vivien was no longer considered untouchable.

Later that evening, the tension in the Duca mansion was thick enough to cut with a butcher's knife as dinner was served in the grand dining room.

Vivien descended the main staircase wearing a stunning, pale green silk gown, looking absolutely radiant and completely unsuspecting of the trap closing around her.

She glided gracefully into the dining room, flashing Lorenzo a brilliant, practiced smile that completely masked the venom he now knew she possessed.

Lorenzo played along flawlessly, rising from his chair to meet her and pressing a gentle, seemingly loving kiss to the back of her manicured hand.

Vivien believed deeply that her immense wealth, perfect pedigree, and massive diamond engagement ring made her utterly invincible in his brutal empire.

She poured herself a glass of expensive red wine, casually complaining about the incompetence of the household staff to maintain her perfect facade.

She had absolutely no idea that the tiny, helpless three-year-old child she had threatened earlier had just handed New York and Boston's deadliest don the ultimate weapon.

Lorenzo smiled warmly at his fiancée across the candlelight, perfectly hiding the fact that he was already orchestrating the total destruction of her entire world.

As dessert was being served, Rocco quietly entered the dining room, his face a completely unreadable mask of stone.

He leaned down and whispered a single, highly disturbing sentence into Lorenzo's ear that changed everything.

The security records from exactly three months ago had indeed been heavily altered, and the authorization code used belonged to Lorenzo’s own brother.
