Chapter 8 - The Interrogation

Alarms blared across the Raven Hill estate, painting the walls in flashes of stark red light.
Steel shutters slammed down over the windows, turning the mansion into an impenetrable fortress.
Guards armed with assault rifles flooded the hallways, rounding up every single member of the household staff.
Sadie sat on the edge of Eleanor’s bed, her throat bruised and her hands covered in June’s makeup.
Ronan burst into the room, his eyes scanning the chaos before locking onto Sadie.
He confirmed that June was dead at the bottom of the chute.
But he also confirmed something much worse.
His security team had searched June’s quarters and found nothing but cheap jewelry and empty vodka bottles.
June didn't have the ledger.
She had been trying to steal it from Sadie, meaning someone else in the house had already found it.
Ronan ordered his men to take Eleanor to the panic room.
He grabbed Sadie by the arm and pulled her into the adjoining bathroom, turning on the shower to drown out the listening devices.
He pinned her against the cold tile wall, his face inches from hers.
He demanded to know the exact details of the falcon tattoo she bore on her wrist.
Sadie cried out, insisting it was just a mark Liam had told her to get so his family would recognize her.
Ronan’s eyes flashed with a terrifying mixture of pity and rage.
He rolled up his own sleeve, exposing a similar, but distinct, raven tattoo on his forearm.
He explained that the Cains bore ravens, not falcons.
The falcon was the calling card of a specialized guild of freelance assassins.
Ronan gripped her shoulders, his voice breaking for the very first time.
He told her that the man who had bled to death in her alley wasn't running from the Volkovs.
He was running from the assassin who had shot him.
Liam hadn't given Sadie that tattoo as a password.
He had forced her to get it so she could infiltrate the assassin's guild and find his killer.
Sadie’s entire world tilted on its axis.

She had spent four years believing she was protecting a hero's legacy.
Instead, she had branded herself with the mark of the monster who had murdered him.
