Chapter 2 - The Silent Code

The two maids slipped out of the room, leaving the dying woman completely abandoned.
Sadie didn’t run.
She dropped to her knees beside the wheelchair, ignoring the frantic pounding of her own heart.
She studied the old woman’s frantic hand movements, recognizing the signs immediately.
Left chest.
Squeezing.
Medicine.
Sadie looked up into the woman’s terrified eyes and raised her own hands, opening her palms in a respectful greeting.
Then, Sadie began to sign with flawless, fluid precision.
She asked where the medicine was usually kept.
The matriarch’s eyes widened in sheer shock, but she managed to point a trembling finger toward the cherrywood nightstand.
Second drawer.
Sadie ripped the drawer open, but found only neatly folded handkerchiefs and a leather-bound Bible.
Someone had cleaned the room and moved things around.
Thinking quickly, Sadie calculated that a right-handed maid would have shoved displaced items into the top right drawer.
She yanked the top drawer open and found a small amber bottle hidden behind an eyeglass case.
She placed one tiny white pill under the matriarch’s tongue, holding a glass of warm water to her pale lips.
Sadie kept one hand on the frail woman’s shoulder, coaching her through deep, rhythmic breaths until the color slowly returned to her cheeks.
When the crisis finally passed, the old woman stared at Sadie with an intensity that made the air feel thin.
Then, the matriarch’s hands moved again.
This time, the gestures were completely different.
They were short, sharp, and highly secretive.
Sadie’s blood ran cold.
It was a private, tactical code that only two people on earth had ever known.
One of them was the dying man who had taught it to Sadie in a dark alley four years ago.
The matriarch signed a desperate, impossible question into the empty air.
Where are you, my child?
Sadie knew she should play dumb and walk away to protect her daughter.
Instead, her hands moved on pure, heartbreaking instinct.
She signed the exact phrase the bleeding man had made her promise to deliver.
I am not lost.
The matriarch gasped, her frail hand shooting out to grab Sadie’s wrist with surprising strength.
She shoved Sadie’s sleeve up, pushing aside the faded fabric wristband.
The small, black falcon tattoo was instantly exposed to the light.
Before either woman could react, a deep, chilling voice echoed from the doorway.
A man in a charcoal-gray suit stepped into the room, his dark eyes fixed on Sadie’s exposed wrist.
May you like
It was Ronan Cain, the ruthless head of the family.
He demanded to know who had given Sadie permission to touch his mother.
