Chapter 7 - The House of Ravens

June’s pristine uniform was slightly wrinkled, and her eyes were wild with desperate greed.
She kicked the door shut behind her, the heavy oak muffling all sound from the hallway.
She sneered at Sadie, mocking her for thinking a street rat could outsmart the Ashport underworld.
June admitted she had been selling Cain family secrets to the Volkovs for years to pay off a massive gambling debt.
She was the one who had seen Sadie signing to the old woman.
She was the one who had tipped off the Russians about the little girl.
June demanded to know where the ledger was, convinced Sadie had just retrieved it from the wall.
Sadie raised her empty hands, her mind spinning wildly as she searched for a weapon.
Through the tiny earpiece, Ronan’s voice crackled into Sadie’s ear, cold and commanding.
He told her to keep June talking.
Sadie swallowed hard and lied, claiming Liam had mailed the ledger to a safety deposit box.
June laughed, a harsh, grating sound, and cocked the pistol.
She said she didn't need the ledger if she could just deliver the girl who knew the code.
Suddenly, Eleanor moved with a speed no one expected from a wheelchair-bound woman.
The matriarch slammed her heavy metal footrest directly into the back of June’s knees.
June screamed and collapsed, the pistol skittering across the polished floor.
Sadie dove for the weapon, her fingers closing around the cold steel just as June lunged for her throat.
They tangled on the ground, rolling toward the heavy wooden doors of the laundry chute.
June’s manicured hands squeezed Sadie’s windpipe, cutting off her air.
Sadie fought through the black spots dancing in her vision.
She brought her knee up violently, striking June in the ribs.
June gasped and stumbled backward.
Her high heel caught on the edge of the open laundry chute.
June tipped backward, her arms flailing as she plummeted down the dark, three-story shaft.
A sickening crunch echoed from the basement level, followed by total silence.
Sadie lay on the floor, gasping for air, her entire body shaking.
Ronan’s voice buzzed in her ear again.

He told her he was locking down the entire estate.
Nobody was leaving Raven Hill alive until they found the missing ledger.
