Chapter 8 - The Midnight Docks

The old naval shipyards were completely abandoned, shrouded in a thick, freezing fog.

I parked my car a mile away and approached the massive warehouses on foot.

I moved silently through the shadows of the rusting cranes, gripping my rifle tightly.

Julian had stationed heavily armed mercenaries at every possible entrance to Warehouse Seven.

I knew I could not take them all out in a direct frontal assault without risking my family's lives.

Suddenly, a suppressed gunshot echoed from the far side of the building, dropping a guard.

I spun around to see Marco creeping out from behind a shipping container.

He had regained consciousness, tracked my vehicle's GPS, and come to fight by my side.

He offered me a bloody, apologetic smile and handed me a bundle of remote explosives.

I accepted his help silently, finally trusting that he was not part of the betrayal.

We synchronized our watches and split up to flank the warehouse doors.

Marco detonated the first explosive charge on the east wall, creating a massive, deafening distraction.

The mercenaries scrambled toward the explosion, leaving the main cargo doors entirely unguarded.

I slipped inside the dark, cavernous warehouse, using the shadows of the crates for cover.

I saw Julian standing in the center of the room, holding a detonator switch in his hand.

Elena and Mia were tied to a structural pillar, surrounded by wired blocks of C4 explosive.

Julian screamed into the darkness, demanding that I show myself and sign the transfer papers.

I stepped out into the dim overhead light, keeping my rifle aimed directly at his chest.

I tossed the signed corporate deeds onto the concrete floor between us.

Julian smiled greedily and bent down to pick up the papers.

He did not realize that I had wired the leather folder with a high-voltage shock mechanism.
