Chapter 7 - The Sins of the Father

The woods fell dead silent.

Ricardo stared at Vincent, the color completely draining from his bruised face.

"Elena's death was a car accident," Ricardo whispered, his voice trembling.

Vincent laughed, a cruel, ugly sound that echoed through the trees.

"I cut the brake lines myself, brother," Vincent confessed proudly.

"She was asking too many questions about our offshore accounts."

A primal, agonizing roar tore from Ricardo's throat.

He surged forward despite his bound hands, tackling the nearest guard to the dirt.

Chaos erupted in the clearing.

Gunfire flashed in the darkness as Ricardo fought like a wild animal.

I knew this was my only chance.

Before we left the bunker, Dante had slipped a small folding knife into my coat pocket.

I reached into my pocket, flicked the blade open, and slashed the leg of the man holding me.

He screamed and dropped his grip.

I lunged toward Vincent, driving my shoulder directly into his chest.

Vincent stumbled backward, dropping Leo in the confusion.

"Run, Leo!" I screamed.

Vincent recovered his balance and aimed his gun directly at my chest.

He pulled the trigger.

A body suddenly threw itself in front of me.

Ricardo took the bullet directly in his shoulder, blood spraying across my face.

He collapsed to the ground, gasping in pain.

Vincent raised his gun to finish the job.

I did not think.

I did not hesitate.

I picked up the discarded assault rifle from the dirt and pulled the trigger.

The recoil knocked me backward, but the burst of bullets hit Vincent squarely in the chest.

Vincent fell dead onto the forest floor.

I dropped the gun and rushed to Ricardo's side, pressing my hands over his bleeding wound.

"You saved us," Ricardo whispered, looking up at me.

Before I could answer, the wail of police sirens pierced the night air.

Dozens of red and blue lights illuminated the trees, but these were not honest cops.

"Vincent's payroll," Ricardo choked out, his eyes closing.

"They are here to finish us off."
