Chapter 10 - A New Family

One year later, the sprawling Moretti estate looked completely different.
The heavy iron door at the end of the hallway was finally unlocked and opened.
The dark, dusty room had been completely renovated into a bright, beautiful playroom for Leo.
Ricardo survived his gunshot wound and made a decision that shocked the entire underworld.
He stepped down from the violent, illegal side of the family business.
With the protection of my grandfather, Ricardo transitioned his empire entirely into legitimate real estate.
He wanted to build a safe, honest world for his son to grow up in.
I was no longer just the nanny, and I was no longer running from my past.
I stood on the balcony overlooking the blooming gardens, wearing a diamond ring on my left hand.
Ricardo walked up behind me and wrapped his strong arms around my waist.
He kissed the side of my neck, holding me close as we watched Leo play in the grass below.
"You gave me my life back, Clara," Ricardo murmured softly.
"We saved each other," I replied, leaning back into his warm embrace.
Our family was finally whole, healed from the ghosts and betrayals that had almost destroyed us.
Everything was perfectly peaceful under the warm afternoon sun.
Then, Dante walked onto the balcony, his face pale and grim.
He handed Ricardo a small, black envelope that had been found at the front gate.
Inside was a photograph of me and Leo sleeping in the garden earlier that morning, taken through the crosshairs of a sniper rifle.

Written on the back of the photograph in dark red ink was a single, terrifying sentence.
"The Commission cannot protect you from the sins of your father."
