Chapter 9 - The Trade

Marcus smiled, his eyes completely devoid of any human empathy.

He told me that leaving witnesses alive was bad for business, and that he was going to kill us all anyway.

He tightened his grip on Annie’s hair, preparing to pull the trigger.

I screamed her name and leaped forward, knowing I couldn't reach them in time.

Suddenly, a massive black armored transport vehicle smashed backward into the alleyway, completely crushing Marcus's escape car.

The rear doors of the transport flew open, and a dozen heavily armed tactical agents poured out.

They were not local police, but a specialized federal task force led by a woman wearing an FBI jacket.

She raised her weapon and fired a single precision shot that struck Marcus directly in his gun hand.

Marcus screamed in agony, dropping his weapon as the federal agents swarmed him.

The lead agent rushed forward, securing the scattered documents from the puddle.

She looked at me and introduced herself as Agent Carter, the handler Lauren had been secretly working with before her death.

Carter explained that they had lost contact with Lauren on the night of the crash and had been building a case against the board ever since.

I fell to my knees on the wet pavement, pulling Jordan and Justin into a desperate, crushing hug.

The nightmare was finally over, and the men who murdered my wife were going to pay.

I turned around to thank Annie for saving my children, feeling an overwhelming surge of gratitude.

Annie was leaning heavily against the brick wall, her face entirely devoid of color.

She looked down at her hands, which were pressed tightly against her stomach.

Dark red blood was seeping rapidly through the fabric of her gray apron.

Marcus’s gun had discharged when he was shot by the FBI, and the bullet had hit her.

She smiled weakly at me, whispered that the boys were safe, and collapsed onto the cold concrete.
