Chapter 4 - The Secret Connection

The black town car sped down the driveway, its tires screeching against the asphalt.

I stood completely frozen for a second, watching the taillights disappear into the dark night.

The blare of approaching police sirens violently snapped me out of my shock.

I snatched the thick envelope off the steps and ran back inside, locking the heavy deadbolt behind me.

I had exactly two minutes before heavily armed officers swarmed my estate.

I tore open the envelope, my eyes scanning the fake financial documents Marcus had masterfully forged.

He had perfectly framed me for embezzling billions of dollars from our international accounts.

But none of that mattered right now.

What mattered was the blood-stained flash drive Annie had pressed against the window.

I realized with absolute certainty that Annie was not just a random housekeeper hired by an agency.

She knew Marcus, and she knew exactly what was happening inside my company.

I sprinted to my home office, locking the solid oak doors and pulling down the blackout blinds.

I opened my hidden floor safe, grabbed a burner phone, a stack of emergency cash, and my registered handgun.

I needed to disappear tonight, find Annie and my boys, and clear my name.

The red and blue lights of police cruisers began flashing intensely through the edges of the window blinds.

Loud, aggressive pounding echoed from the front door, followed by a voice demanding entry.

I slipped out through the secret architectural exit behind my bookshelf, a feature only I knew existed.

I moved silently through the dark woods behind my property, dialing a number I hadn't used in a decade.

"I need a ghost extraction, right now," I whispered into the burner phone.

The gruff voice on the other end gave me an address in the industrial district and immediately hung up.

I ran for three miles through the dense trees, my mind racing with thoughts of my terrified children.

When I finally reached the abandoned warehouse, I pushed open the rusted metal door.

I expected to find my old fixer waiting in the shadows.

Instead, I found Annie standing perfectly alone in the center of the room, holding a loaded gun pointed directly at my chest.
