Chapter 4 - The Fortress

The Sterling Estate sat on fifty acres of pristine, rugged coastline. It was a fortress of glass, steel, and ancient stone, perched on a cliff overlooking the churning Atlantic Ocean. Inside, the atmosphere was one of absolute tranquility, a stark contrast to the violence brewing in the city.

Beatrice sat in the sprawling, mahogany-paneled library, a cup of Earl Grey tea resting on the table beside her. She was reading a first-edition copy of Great Expectations, seemingly without a care in the world.

Silas stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out into the pitch-black night. The storm was rolling in, the rain lashing against the reinforced glass. He wore tactical trousers and a fitted black sweater, his posture rigid, his instincts humming like high-voltage wires.

"You haven't slept in two days, Silas," Beatrice noted, not looking up from her book.

"Vance is a coward, Madam. But cowards are dangerous when they are cornered," Silas replied, his eyes scanning the tree line. "The forensic audit found he embezzled over four million dollars. He knows he's going to prison. He will make a move."

"And that is why you are here," Beatrice smiled softly, finally closing the book. She trusted Silas completely. He had been by her side for a decade, ever since she pulled him out of a military court-martial that had unjustly scapegoated him. She gave him a purpose; he gave her absolute protection.

"I have recalibrated the perimeter sensors and locked down the subterranean vault," Silas said, turning to face her. "But I would prefer it if you moved to the panic room for the evening."

"Nonsense," Beatrice said, standing up. "I will not be held hostage in my own home by a petty thief. I am going to bed. If anyone comes knocking, kindly tell them I am not receiving guests."

Silas watched her walk up the grand staircase. His respect for her was boundless. But as the clock struck midnight and the storm outside intensified, Silas didn't rest. He walked to a hidden panel behind a bookshelf, placing his thumb on a biometric scanner. The panel slid open, revealing an armory of military-grade weaponry.

He selected a suppressed Heckler & Koch USP tactical pistol, checking the chamber with practiced, lethal efficiency. He could feel it in the air. The shift in atmospheric pressure. The silence between the thunderclaps.

They were coming.
