Chapter 2 - The Vanguard Revelation

Vance scrambled backward like a frightened crab, his expensive suit jacket riding up his shoulders. He was humiliated, his face burning with a mixture of terror and absolute rage. The gallery patrons, the wealthy investors, and the artists he had lorded over for years were all staring at him, whispering behind manicured hands.

"You can't do this!" Vance shrieked, struggling to his feet. He pointed a trembling finger at Silas. "I am Elias Vance! I run this gallery! I answer directly to the Vanguard Board of Directors! You are dead! Both of you! Security, arrest them!"

Four armed security guards rushed into the main hall, their hands resting on their holstered batons. They looked at Vance, then at Silas, and hesitated. There was something about the way Silas stood—perfectly balanced, hands loose at his sides—that triggered a primal survival instinct in the guards.

"Arrest them!" Vance screamed again, spit flying from his lips.

"I wouldn't advise that, gentlemen," Beatrice said. Her voice was gentle, yet it commanded the entire room. She reached into her leather handbag and withdrew a sleek, matte-black card etched with a gold crest. She held it up between her index and middle fingers.

The head of security stopped dead in his tracks. The color drained from his face. He recognized the crest. Everyone in the high-end art and finance world recognized it. It was the seal of the Vanguard Trust.

"My name is Beatrice Sterling," she announced, her voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room. "I am the founder and majority shareholder of the Vanguard Trust. This gallery, the art within it, and the ground upon which you are standing belong to me."

A collective gasp ripped through the crowd. Investors who had been ignoring her minutes ago suddenly looked as if they had seen a ghost. Beatrice Sterling was a myth, a reclusive billionaire who controlled a vast global empire from the shadows. She never made public appearances. Until tonight.

Vance stopped breathing. His mouth opened and closed like a fish suffocating on dry land. "Madam Sterling... I... I had no idea..."

"That is precisely the point, Mr. Vance," Beatrice said, her tone dripping with icy disappointment. "I came here tonight anonymously to observe how my investments were being managed. I found a tyrant who abuses his power, belittles his staff, and lays hands on patrons. You do not run this gallery anymore. Your employment is terminated. Your accounts are frozen pending a full forensic audit. Silas, please show Mr. Vance the door."

Silas took one step forward. Vance didn't wait for a second. He turned and sprinted for the exit, stumbling over the brass threshold and disappearing into the rainy night, utterly ruined.
