Chapter 5 - The Master Code

The gunshot was deafening in the enclosed space of the ancient chapel.
Evelyn stumbled backward, clutching her stomach as bright red blood stained her white blouse.
My attorney screamed and dropped to her knees to apply pressure to the wound.
Jonathan kept his hand firmly on the detonator switch, his eyes wide with adrenaline and madness.
He aimed the smoking barrel at my head and told me I had exactly ten seconds to provide the master code.
He began counting down from ten, his voice echoing off the stained glass windows.
I knew that if I gave him the money, he would blow up the church anyway to eliminate all witnesses.
I looked at the federal agent standing nearby, silently communicating a desperate plan with my eyes.
I shouted out a sequence of numbers, pretending to yield to his demands.
Jonathan's head of security quickly typed the sequence into a tablet connected to the offshore servers.
The tablet emitted a harsh, buzzing error sound.
The security chief looked up in sheer panic and announced that the code had triggered a permanent lockdown.
Every single bank account associated with Duncan Apex Holdings was now permanently seized by the federal government.
Jonathan's face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated rage.
He raised the gun to execute me, accepting that he had lost the fortune forever.
Before he could pull the trigger, his mother suddenly threw herself between us.
Rosalind grabbed the barrel of the gun and told him to stop being a reckless fool.

She looked at her son with cold, calculating eyes and revealed her ultimate betrayal.
She calmly stated that she had quietly transferred the majority of the funds into her own secret accounts weeks ago.
