Chapter 8 - The Game of Cat and Mouse

The pitch-black darkness of the tunnel felt incredibly heavy, pressing against my chest and making it difficult to breathe.

I dropped completely to my hands and knees, desperately sweeping the cold dirt floor in search of the discarded detonator.

I could hear Adrian's ragged breathing echoing in the small space, masking the exact direction of his location.

He taunted me from the shadows, his voice bouncing off the stone walls to create a terrifying, disorienting illusion.

I closed my eyes, forcing my mind to perfectly recall the complex wiring diagram of the explosives I had seen just seconds ago.

My fingers brushed against the hard plastic casing of the detonator, and a tiny, glowing screen illuminated the darkness with thirty seconds remaining.

I grabbed the device, but a heavy leather boot suddenly slammed down onto my wrist, pinning my arm painfully to the ground.

Adrian chuckled softly above me, pressing the cold steel of his gun barrel directly against the back of my neck.

He whispered that he wanted me to watch the timer hit zero, forcing me to witness my own absolute failure.

I completely stopped struggling, letting my body go limp to trick him into thinking I had finally surrendered to my fate.

I used my free hand to blindly reach into the pocket of my ruined suit, my fingers wrapping tightly around a small pair of forensic wire cutters.

I waited until the glowing red timer reached exactly ten seconds, knowing his attention would be entirely focused on the impending blast.

I violently twisted my body upward, driving my elbow directly into his kneecap with every ounce of strength I possessed.

Adrian shouted in sudden pain, stumbling backward and completely losing his grip on his heavy weapon.

I scrambled toward the massive cluster of C4 attached to the pillar, the red timer dropping to a terrifying five seconds.

I blindly grabbed the thick bundle of wires, desperately searching for the primary blue connection that controlled the main firing sequence.

I squeezed the metal cutters perfectly through the blue wire just as the digital timer ticked down to a single, agonizing second.

The blinking red lights on the explosive packs instantly went dark, leaving the tunnel in absolute, terrifying silence.

The emergency backup lights suddenly flickered on, casting a dim, sickly yellow glow across the damp stone corridor.

I breathed a massive sigh of relief, but then I felt the sharp, cold edge of a hunting knife press tightly against my throat.
