Chapter 9 - The Handcuffs

Detective Miller walked across the luxurious living room, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Harper Vance," Miller said, his voice echoing over the quiet hum of the ocean outside the windows. "You are under arrest for elder abuse, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, forgery, and grand larceny."

Harper fought back. She screamed, kicked, and thrashed as the officers grabbed her arms, ruining her expensive silk dress.

"You can't do this to me!" she wailed, sobbing hysterically as the cold steel clicked around her wrists. "Aunt Evelyn, please! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! Don't let them take me!"

I stood perfectly still, watching the young woman I had supported, funded, and loved for twenty-five years reveal her true, pathetic nature.

"The police van is waiting downstairs, Harper," I said softly, echoing the exact cruelty she had shown me just ten minutes earlier. "Don't make this difficult in front of my friends."

The room watched in absolute, stunned silence as the police dragged my screaming niece out of the condo. The heavy mahogany door slammed shut behind her, cutting off her cries.

I turned back to the room. The silence was thick, heavy with the adrenaline of the confrontation.

I looked at the catering staff, who were standing frozen by the buffet.

"Well," I said, a genuine smile finally breaking across my face. "Let's cut the cake."
