Chapter 7 - The Verdict

The courtroom was dead silent when the foreperson stood up.

Guilty on all counts. Wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and conspiracy.

My mother collapsed into her chair, sobbing hysterically. My father just stared straight ahead, completely broken.

The judge showed absolutely no mercy during sentencing. He looked down at my parents with pure disgust.

“You stole your daughter's future out of sheer favoritism and greed,” the judge stated. “You violently assaulted her in public when she refused to suffer in silence. You are a disgrace to the title of parents.”

They were sentenced to eight years in federal prison, followed by a decade of supervised probation. They were ordered to pay back every single dime of the stolen money, plus punitive damages to me.

Julian avoided prison due to his testimony, but he was slapped with five years of strict probation, thousand hours of community service, and joint liability for the restitution.

As the bailiffs placed my parents in handcuffs, my mother looked back at me.

“Lily, please! We’re your family!” she wailed.

I looked her dead in the eye. “You’re just a failure in handcuffs.”
